Yes, we've discussed this before but times are-a-changing with other insurers now entering this niche market to attract more business.

Just seeing what you guys have experienced and what thoughts are going through your minds? I suppose my question is two-fold:
1. Has anyone ever had their car written off and bought it back from the insurer? what kind of price/percentage do insurers usually ask for the written off vehicle?
2. Does anyone have modified car insurance with another company? ie Justcars, Custom Car etc. and how does it compare to Shannons?

Id like to read about other peoples experiences and see what kind of things are going on out there.

My Scenario:

Ive been with Shannons insurance for 3 years now and my car went from $18,000 value in 2009 to $15,000 in 2012.... now I get a letter saying its dropping to $14,000 for 2013. (My Genuine yellow plate EVO III was insured at $16k last year). The insured value of the car is dropping significantly, yet the price for the policy has gone up over the years! Im > 30 yrs old with no driving offences in the last 5 years.
Its now costing $562pa for $14k cover. Not bad, but I was paying less than that at $18k cover with them 3 years ago!
They have photos and receipts and evidence that Ive spent over $50k (now $60k) on the car and the last time I spoke to them I got a bit pissed off with the Shannons rep and asked 'how much will the value drop to?'. I even contemplated if its even worth insuring anymore. Remember, many modified cars are custom built (and some engineered and legit) and they can NEVER be replaced simply by looking for a replacement in a Carsales ad. Sure for $14k you might pick up a dodgey EVO IV, V or VII, even a bog stock 2010 CJ Lancer.... but thats not the point - those cars are a dime a dozen and not unique. They will never replace our custom built car and will certainly not replace the time and money many have poured into their projects and genuinely looking for long term insurance cover.

Shannons do offer a buy-back option in case your car is written off but Im a bit worried about that as I dont know anybody who has gone through the process. As part of my first application for cover, Shannons requested that I send them evidence of how much Ive spent and what its worth to me (with photos, receipts etc). Therefore under this 'buy back' policy, who knows what ransom they might hold me to if it ever gets written off and completely not at my fault. e.g. Lets say your car is Insured for $15k, some dikhead runs a red light and smashes your car and they write it off. Would Shannons want say $10k to buy the wreck and only pay out $5k minus the excess? Hardly seems insuring at all especially for cars that are rarely driven at all.

Im thinking fuk insurance altogether as the only thing we're doing is lining their pockets with more and more money and if ever our cars get written off, you could probably end up selling the parts for more than what it would cost you to buy it back and get paid out in the long run anyway. Ive always never insured cars under $10k value (other than 3rd party property damage) as its simply not worth it.

Went through the same thing as you before i took my evo 3 off the road. Pretty much i told just cars to eat a dick cause there is no way i could get another evo 3 for 14g.

Be good to see what comes out of this thread as my car is nearly ready for the road again its time to start shopping for insurance.

here is a weird one....

I checked QBE to insure my EVO 1...didnt know what it was and it has a modified exhaust and wheels so they wanted to impose an excess. FUK that thinks I....call SGIO....knew what it was and asked if it was an RS or a GSR.

cheap too.

wish i was paying 562 for mine, 1700pa through just car for being under 25.. its robbery have been considering getting rid of it or just going to 3rd party myself.

Geez, 7 years ago when I had my E2 and 27 years old the cheapest premium I could find was $3200 a year and it was insured for $15k lol. Now with the Evo 6, after shopping around before purchase, RACV wanted $2700 a year, Just Cars wanted $1700 ( with a $1500 excess) and I ran with Shannons. I pay $970 a year, $400 excess and originall was insured for $17k but after sending through the pics of my respray the value was increased.

Lumleys insurance is another one you can try, but I found Shannons to be the best.

All in all, premiums will eventually have larger increases, and mainly due to the increase in refrigeration gas (air con)...... A customer of mine claims a bottle of R34 gas has increased from $1000 a bottle to just under $5000 a bottle, this is the after effects of a carbon tax ,and considering nearly all cars these days are equipped with air con the insurance companies are going to have to increase premiums to cover this...... THANKS JULIA

Lol. Good one Gianni. But no matter how much I hate the 2 horse race govt, Julia is still the lesser of the 2 evils.
I forgot to mention that my insurance is not for a daily driver, hence the cost for cover. Its weekend and special event use only. However the policy with Shannons does allow you to drive the car to work temporarily only if your normal means of transport (aka your daily driver) is not functional or in for repairs, flat battery etc.

I gotta look at insurence soon I think. I'm with just car and think I can get better. I'm only 3rd party.

Why do you think Julia is lesser of two evils :p

OK, I sent Just Cars my info, photos of the car, mods and the Engineer's Certficate as they requested.
They responded today with a quotation to insure it comprehensively for $18,000 - the sum that I requested in order to compare it to what Shannons were offering me.
Just Cars are insuring it for EVERY DAY DRIVING. They also offer discounts in premium values which are offset by the excess charges.
Its really opened my eyes and gives me something to compare to.
Its great to see Just Cars are in the market to insure fully modified cars now, whereas before they were only limited to a few modifications.

I have the choice of:
Shannons - Comprehensive Limited Driving Cover (Weekends/Special Occasions). $14,000 value. $562pa premium. $550 excess.
JustCars - Comprehensive No Driving Restrictions. $18,000 value. Choice of premium/excess $1033/$600; $957/$800; $876/$1100; $789/$1400; $708/$1700

I will call them up tomorrow with the quotation number just to double check the restrictions, and if it is for 'everyday driving', do they offer cover for weekend/special ocassion driving as well.

Details of today's Just Cars quotation attached:

Funny story today that relates

I was driving through a carpark when someone reversed out and into my rear driver quarter panel. No damage at all to my daily. But he had some paint missing. I'm like "all good mate. No harm done"
He then turns around wanting my details saying its my fault. I query how, he says I should be watching for people wanting to reverse.
I couldn't be bothered arguing with the dude so took photos of the whole scene and damage.

Afterwards called just car to tell them the story, they said what I thought all along. The guy was reversing out of a car spot so has the greater duty of care. I'm like the guys just a dick head.

Point of the story, whilst I was on the phone I asked them about pay as you go or millage insurance for a car that is rarely driven. They only off 3rd party or full comp

At the moment insurance is being dominated by Suncorp which is the "underwriter" of such well known companies as GIO, AAMI, APIA and Just car insurance, that I know off. You forfeit your choice of repairer which I think is wrong. If you are under the impression its your choice of repairer think again, they offer "cheap" insurance because they deal with "cheap" repairers. Hell I could tell you guys some stories on what assessors have decided to put secondhand on cars that are 18 months old but I think that can be left for another topic discussion lol

Shannon's offer my choice of repairer and even because I'm in the trade are happy to pay me to use my knowledge and connections to repair the car myself (touch wood). So just be aware cheaper doesn't always mean better. I pay MY premium, on MY car and if something happens I feel it should be MY choice what happens to MY car and where it goes. Sorry just really passionate about the panel industry and the road it's slowly going down.

I have Shannon's storage and transport insurance on my Coupe with an agreed value of $30K for $572/pa.

Ideal for a racecar that never gets driven on the road, as it's insured for damage/theft whilst in storage at home or a workshop and during transport to/from a race event or workshop.

Yeah I think I'll ride it out with Shannons for a while. If it drops much more then I'll try agreed value or swap over to Just Cars.
I only drove the car less than 900km last year and that was on the rare weekend.
Still, I cant imagine what I'ld do if the car was ever written off and I didnt have cover. I'd regret it forever.
