Does anyone have the correct wiring diagram for the 1993 GSR MPI relay, serial number E8T08471? Have two here but neither of them are wired the same as the relay in the car. Wiring is as follows:

1.Black Blue
2.Red
3.Red with silver bands
4.Black yellow
5.White red with silver bands
6.Black
7.Black white
8.Black yellow with silver bands

4 and 8 have permanent power.

Try having a look at these:

Look at post#13 here: http://www.4gtuner.com/index.php?/topic/6740-evo-ecu-pinout-colour-chart-completed/

Interesting thread. My evo 1 is intermitttantly running. Only get to run it for a week, twice a year. Last time i went home this problem occurred. Sometimes will start and run, but will appear to splutter and stall. I'm guessing this is due to the fuel pump losing its power source from this relay. Due to the switchs in these relays always being in the closed position when the car is running it's whole life, would there be wear and tear on the internal coils. Should i just replace this dual relay, or is more diagnosis required. Is this a common fault to replace these relays? I've had the fuel pump out before and there is no problem with it. Can i just clarify the location of the relay. Is it behind the cd player part of the dash/centre console? Or is it behind the instrument cluster? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i will be attempting to get it sorted over the xmas break

I think you need more diagnosis however swapping the relay out for another is a quick sanity check to eliminate it as the problem.
The relay lives behind the ashtray/cd player.

Checked it out today. found the relay, and probed it with my test light. with the ignition on start, if i earthed pin 8 "red and white thin wire" it would energise the coil and send power to the fuel pump. So i'm guessing the ecu is not switching that wire to earth. Cheated the system and manually closed the switch to send power to the fuel pump, but the tacho stayed around 1500rpm and would not drop. Opened up the ecu and inspected those capacitors. Found a black stain around one of them. I suspect it has leaked and is intermittantly working, as sometimes the car starts and runs, but then the fuel pump loses power and the car stalls. Has anyone in brisbane or the goldy have an evo 1 ecu they want to sell, in working order obviously. your help would be greatly appreciated. 0458 581 281

After replacing the leaky capacitor in the ecu with a new one from jaycar, the problem was still present. Suspect the circuitry around that leaking capacitor has been damaged. So now to find an ecu. Not easy over a new years break. Thankfully HYPO, a member from this forum was not to far away, and had an ecu for sale. He went out of his way to bring over the ecu to finish the diagnosis. Success. New ecu has solved the intermittant operation of the MPI relay fuel pump side. Pin 8 on the ecu was not being switched to earth. Thanks again HYPO for your help on new years eve. Problem solvered. :) Hope this thread helps out others with MPI relay faults.

Great news and diagnosis. Props to guys like Hypo who extend a helping hand to sort a fellow member out.
Things like that build friendships in and out of the forum B)
