Nankangs or not?

Help Support 4GTuner:

Also got some 195/50/15 Adrenalins for $100, now thats a bargin!!
I checked the Bridgestone website and I saw they do them
in 205/50/15 size too which is good.
There's so many more tyre options when you get rid of
the 195/60/14's that are OEM on the GSR's.
I'll have to look into these as well.

k104s are terrible!! I have them on my civic (which has DMS coilovers so you cant blame the suspension :p )

Id go Hankook RS2s over anything that has been mentioned already, they rock...

I agree re: The Hankook RS-2 Z212 (Not to be confused with the Z211 competition tyre) Best 'street' tyres I've ever owned, although I now consider Toyo R888s street tyres as I run them fulltime these days

hmm not sure maybe you guys had a shitty batch of kt04's :D

I've driven hard in them, and cant say anything bad about them; they're a great all-round tyre. My friend's beemer 325 was fitted with them and he loved them!

Okay I know some of you guys are goina give me shit but I'll give ya an update.
Bought the Nankangs  at $125 each and being a pov student I bought them.
When I drove off from the tyre joint with them they were more noisy than my previous Nitto Neo Gens but seems to quieten down a little after.
So far so good.

Bit late now, but I agree with whoever suggested toyo T1R's, 17" can be had for well under $200 a piece, and they'll run rings *cough* around nankangs, imo they offer the best comprimise between grip/price for a daily driver.

That was me- although I have paid more than $200 each on the last 3 sets I have owned. The 215x35x18's I got last time were $300 each from memory

I got my last set of 215/40/17's for $170 each - kiwi $$

not looking forward to replacing the 235/40/18's that came with my new rims though - thankfully they are almost brand new (still have the hairy bits and the coloured lines on em)

My 2 cents worth! I worked at Bob Jane Tmart as a manager for 10 years
to answer your original question to go with the nankangs :- "OR NOT"

if you are a granny or selling the car go with it! If you actually drive the car spend the money and get some thing better!

That bit of rubber is the only thing between you and the road, It doesn't matter how good your brakes or suspension is, that little patch is all you have!

If you buy them or have bought them, let me know where you are when it rains, so I can choose a different route home :p

ive had this disscussion with mates numerous times.
Generally, a tyres wet weather performance is highly dependent on tread pattern and considering semis have little to none, i would assume that aqua planing would be a big issue with them. But ive been told and seen mates drive through mountains on semis in wet weather and they seemed to be holding ok so im still not 100%

The kuhmo v70a semi-slicks I used to use weren't bad in the wet, but they have a more conventional tread pattern (when compared to something like an RE55 or a D01J) which would help with water dissipation.

The downside of them is they are terrible when they're stone cold, even bordering on dangerous. If you keep that in mind and drive accordingly, they're bloody great.

When it's raining, do race cars use street tyres, or do they use semislicks? That should answer the question about semislicks in the wet.

It's only when you have standing water or puddles, then you will find street tyres are more resistant to aquaplaning than semis are. All the rest of the time, a semislick will outgrip a street tyre on wet roads.

A good tyre is the R1R toyo I was excited when i got 10k out of them normally i would only get 5k out of any semi.

One of the best "street" tyres I have found , and i was very suprised how well they handled was the yokohamas S drives, I was short of money and had to fit tyres 4 x 205 50 16's yokos and while they aren't semi's they are quite good for under 200 each, (i'm making over 300hp ATW)

But seriously those R1R's in the wet were great, don't make them in my size anymore - hence the yokos
