I posted on caa, but thought id ask you guys too to recommend me a headunit :D (More opinions the merrier, plus im sick of no music)

Id like it to have...

- 3 rca preouts (6ch out for front/rear/sub)
- detachable face
- read mp3 (all of them do nearly now anyways)/cdr-cdrw
- black deck to match black dash
- coloured display if possible
- remote control (not really necessary but nice)

Ive been thinking most likely out of these three,

Clarion DXZ766MP. Looks alright, changes colour?
Alpine CDA-9857. Looks ok but boring screen?
Panasonic CQ-C8403, opinions, as im interested in this one?

I'd also like to look at an Alpine CDA-9853R but cant see to find the it.
I will only have an amp to run the subs, not the speakers. Note: I dont really care about bluetooth or ipod.

Ive ruled out kenwood, pioneer (too expensive for black units), eclipse, blaken_whatever_it_is & jvc (ok but not black).

you could go all out and get the eclipse avn-6600 :p

It will read mp3s 8)

that looks nice but looks like a fortune :)
i think im keen on this panasonic, hopefully ill friggen choose one and put this out of my missery :D

most alpine headunits will last a lifetime.

ive never had a problem with any of mine.

i do highly recommend them.

jb hifi now stock alpine gear so u may be able to haggle them a lot more usually lookout for gary's car radio they usually have a big sale every now n then.

eclipse is awesome but issit really worth that extra money?

that panasonic looks sweet.. specs are okay too!..

you thought about gettin a headunit with GIGA-mp3 (plays mp3's on dvds)?
that's the main reason i want to upgrade my head unit. I know you can fit like 150 - 200 songs on an CD. But i like to keep updating my cd aswell as keep the old ones.

I've got the Alpine CDA-9857 and it works a treat.
And yes, the screen is a bit boring.
But it comes down to what you want, flashy screen or sound quality?

i just got a kenwood now i allways stayed away from them but this ones sweet.
got every thing you ask for in your list and its black and its on sale in autobarn

and you can hook up your ipod or mp3 player to itwith out have a bunch of wires lieing around.

cost me 600 you can get them in chirenside park autobarn for 400 to 350

Panasonic are shit. Last 12 months max before the buttons fall off.

Pioneer have pathetic sound due to wonderful 2v pre-outs.

Alpine is the same shit. It's a pioneer with a different brandname on the front.

The only headunits that actually last are JVC and Eclipse units. JVC have fucking annoying flashing buttons and the volume buttons stop working after about 24 months but the remote works fine.

Eclipse will last 4+ years without an issue and come with the (any sound nut will tell you) wonderful 8v pre-outs.

I can also get you any Eclipse head unit at a seriously reduced price.

Once you go Eclipse you never go back. Ever. I have one and I won't settle for anything less... actually I have two.

ive got the new JVC KD-G825. recommend the deck to anyone. its the new type that has the USB port on the side. good sound control and good looking display. can upload images and what not onto it aswell.

i only payed $300 for it as my mates dad works at Tonkins. im pretty sure they retail at only $450.

Hold on... you do know that "8V preout" is all bs talk man? I'd like to see 8V preout, even 4V, because its all possible, but will never happen in the real world. Actually i should get a oscilliscope and see for myself.

50x4watts yea? As if. Thats the peak, my arse it will ever hit 50x4. Actually it does, for about .01 of a second, and then the voltage drops & settles. Its all marketing. Real figures would show around 10 to 20 watts RMS max.

I built a class AB amp (mono) made to delivery 10watts, but only puts out around 1.5watts rms, due to me thinkng my mp3 player output (which is my input to my amp) was 1v out, but is only .1volt rms. Now ill need a preamp to boost it from .1 to 1v to get my 10watts. Meh.

Also 1.5 watts is actually fairly loud as it is. If i heard 50 watt rms im sure my ears would hurt anyways.

btw, are you talking about the new panasonics headunits or the old ones? I just dont seem to like the looks of the eclipse but ill check them out anyways. Tnxs for the opinions ppl.

Edit: Choose the panasonic, love it :D
