Hey thought I would post up some pics of my new cooler set up.

I just got the car back from Meek and it's driving mean. This has been my best upgrade for the car to date, which is awesome to say after all these years of owning the car.

We went with a right mounted set up and Chris custom made all the piping. So no pipe going over the top of the cooler as you normally see.

What you all think?

The idea is good, it would be interesting to know what the flow is like on your setup vs stock vs plasmaman vs stock with ralliart piping. GKTech released a similar setup for the s13-15 Nissans but it was fairly restrictive and people had trouble making power.
 
Yeah I'd be interested to know myself. Maybe it's just a massive difference because my last intercooler was a small piece of shit, lol.

I've got the HKS air intake as well which I've been really happy with. I've never actually dyno'd the car. Maybe I should see what the figures are lol

Yeah it Is a bit smaller. But really happy with it ay, I had a shitty cooler and heavy steel piping previously

Was thinking of running it around 18psi

It looks smaller than the OEM EVO icoola but the core on this new one appears much thicker, so it will cool quite well.
I like my icoolas to fill up the entire hole in the front bar, but that's just me lol :w00t:
 
I saw your car & IC the other day. IMO it will build solid pressure Quicker than a taller IC.
Chris was very proud of the setup & made me have a look.
On/Off throttle it will jump to your set PSI. Thumbs up from me!!

i think you might also find intake temps rise because of the desing with such LONG tanks you might find that the flow is more centered around the end with the outlets. resulting in a hot end and a cold end
 
I know what you are getting at Kyle, but the end tanks are tapered accordingly to alleviate that from occurring as the air will travel through the core better and reduce static pressure drop whilst at it.
If the intercooler end tanks were symmetrically rectangular and the same size all the way across the core, then what you are saying would happen at a grander scale.
There's more to intercooler design, size, angles of end tanks, placement of inlet and outlet pipes etc than people think.
 
Here's some pics to look at.
As air gets cooler it slows down anyway so there will always be a pressure drop regardless of what intercooler you use, but the amount of pressure drop makes a difference. 2psi pressure drop is the usual acceptable amount for intercoolers. But intercooler design can make it much worse.
Then we have temperature drops. Ultimately you would want an intercooler that can get air through the entire core with minimum turbulence. See the first and 2nd pic with turbulent square end tanks = no good.
With big ass intercoolers as in pic 3 with the inlet and outlet on the bottom or say about 1/3 of the way up the intercooler, the thermal imaging pic shows that air basically only moves across the bottom half of the intercooler with the area above it basically acting as a heatsoak and dead weight for most of the time.
The tapered design works well - much like the intercooler SWTGSR is using in pic 4.
With the bigger intercoolers you can have a splitter/ baffle made in the end tank which helps split the air and redirect some of it upwards into the upper cores as seen in pics 5 and 6.
Intercooler design is best left to the professionals who do R&D and test the results. Anything from entry and exit angle to end tank design or staggered cores etc all plays a part in the balance between cooling and pressure drop for whatever intended use of the vehicle.

Mind me asking how much you paid?? spoke to chris a while back said he would get back to me haven't heard anything since. Its the exact same set up as my hks intercooler and since my cooler is fucked might be best option for me.
 
I like it - the setup looks to keep the piping route quite efficient. Will be interested to get your feedback after you've driven the car for a while with it.

Only thing I would suggest is adding some rubber isolators to the mounting points like the factory setup (if it doesn't already have them - I can't 100% tell from the pics), so the system has a little more give than compared to being solid mounted.

Will just reduce the chance of something cracking over time.
 
So just ordered this bad boy from treadstone in the states. I refuse to pay plazamans ridicules price and the cooler meek have doesn't look like the best quality. Now to find a decent place to make me some piping. any suggestions?

If you have time and want to save a few dollars on the cooler piping, I just bought one of those cheap kits of bends and straights of eBay, then cut them up and tape in place as required then take to your local gate manufacturer to weld up! If you wanted stainless you could still do it this way
 
That's what I did. You can generally work out what bends you need and just order them individually.

Aluminium is easy enough to cut, and I personally think cooler piping is the easier and more enjoyable part of a build usually.
 
For an el cheapo option this is what I did - intercooler is out of a XR6.

Probably not adequate for big power but for my current situation does the job
