As above. How long does it normally take? I have put some new 3G lifters in mine and after a run it's still sounds crappy. I did bleed them before i put the new ones in so no bent valves

Idea's?

When I did mine (4g93t however process etc. is all identical) the lifter noise was gone in less than 10 seconds.

took me about 2 hours and i did bleed them. I changed my oil at the same time not sure if that makes a difference

This is loud. Like really loud. Way louder than it use to be. Its sitting in the shed till I finish work will then see what happens. Don't really want to drive it in case I bend something. As soon as its fixed it's back on the market.

How long did you run the engine?
It can take a while. Just keep driving it.
You won't bend anything, the diesel noise is just the lifters bottoming out. It's when they are 'too full' of oil that you can bend a valve.
It should go away completely after a few hours. I've done it many times.

Let it idle for about 20 mins then went for a drive up to shop and back. Maybe another 10 mins.

Going to start it in the morning and leave it idle till its gone. Will this work ?

like i said ay , i left my car for a good 2 hours and then she quietened down to a dull roar. took her for a drive and now she's perfect

Head pressure seamed ok. When I cranked it with the Tappet cover off it thru oil about a foot out I he motor.

Yesterday. Started it. Left it idle for 20 mins came back. Car has stopped. Tries to start it. Nothing. Bit of a back fire. So went to bed as I was on night shift. Went out yesterday arvo. Tried to start it. Huge backfire. Like shook me shed

Did a compression test yesterday. Zero all 4. So either blown head gasket or engine full of holes. To say I'm unhappy is a understatement. The car was sold. All I had to do was get a roady and it was gone. Then the tappets started. Very very very pissed about now.

Oh man... What a pain in the arse!

Maybe it wasn't the lifters that were making the noise?
I agree with clone, whenever I've replaced lifters with new ones (I bleed them first), the tappet noise has always taken a considerable amount of time to quieten down.
Did you verify the valve timing marks when you did the belt?

belt was never changed. car was running not a problem in the world. went to start it and bang lifter noise. did the old broom stick on the motor and the noise was coming from the rocker cover. even checked the bottom end noise and nothing. the noise was still coming from the rocker cover after the new lifters went in

i cant beilive the problems with this now. how the fuck lifter noise can end up causing a blown head gasket is just insane. its just not possible. motor comes out tomorrow for a diagnosis. will seee what it looks like when i take the head off.

Sorry to hear that mate.

Did you do the lifters with the cams left in?
Or did you pull the cams out and change the lifters?

Maybe the rocker arms have fallen off the valve / lifters jamming valves open?

No man. Bought the Lifter tool from meek and did them in the car. Have had the rocker cover off today and nothing in the top looks amiss. Turned over motor by hand and checked everything before I started it.

Starting to think the head gasket unrelated.

So engine out. Head off. Took me 4 hrs in total.

Valves have smacked number 2 3 4 cylinders. Not hard but enough. Looks like 4 is bent. Cam to cam gear locating pin has broken off.

So either the pin broke and cause the valves to hit or number 4 hit and caused the pin to break. Either way I have no idea why. So I will be starting a new thread with advise on what is needed. I have a spare head so going to chuck that on get the thing running and get rid of it.

Not starting a new thread now.

On closer inspection it appears that the valves are probably not bent. Still going to get it checked as engine was idleing. Am not going to use the new lifters. I have 2 sets of old ones which I have been thru and chucked the crappy ones. They are sitting in some good degreaser and will get cleaned every few days till they go back in. I found the 2 that caused the problem to start with and are blocked solid. 3G ones can go else where

I was told that if u delete the balance shafts, which I have, u need to drop the pressureat the oil pump if u use the 3 g lifters as they can be over pressurized . Yes / no.

Thanks for the help. I just hope that the old ones don't play up between now and when it's sold.

I've never heard of that before.
I've heard of people porting the oil pump housing / bypass port as a result of increased oil pressure due to blocked off ports in the block as a result of the balance shaft deletion.

Can't believe the locating dowel broke off. And this all happened while it was idling?
Some bad luck there man..
Which camshaft? Intake or exhaust?
