New to mods chip or ecu

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

me and mikey have been looking hard at ps1000's best i've found is 1750 with a long/short lead kit and mikey found 1400 (i think without loom) now depending on how you go about it you could preety much plaug and play the ps1000 on the base maps. (how well it'd run is anyones guess but you put on 3 hrs or so of tuning and you'd be looking at a much more robust setup.

my personal plans are ps1000 wide band for auto tune and a short jump down the road flex fuel.

Have you priced the evo7 ecu, injectors and afm?
Its not very expensive stuff.
How much does a ps1000 cost to fit and tune? Probably not much more
exactly....the price on the previous page seems a bit excessive to me.

Thanks jamo. Admittedly it might be a bit to wire in. But not more than a few pins.
We go for the late evo ecu because its cheap. Cheaper than anything else. Cheaper than ecmlink.

At that price I would consider ecmlink. Once you are socketed you are good to drop the chip in. No other changes.
Tho you will miss out on boost control. Either a mbc or ebc is required.
You can still go bigger injectors and late maf and ecmlink is easy to use and has huge backup. There is even remote tune available. (Log a 3rd gear pull, post the log and get the tune back to upload to car) guys run 9s on ecmlink.

I can put in ecmlink and get it running safe. You will just need a dyno and wideband to do the full throttle bit.

Surely with the ecu pinouts of each ECU next to you....swapping the different pins couldnt be that hard?
From memory with mine, there were 4/5 wires that needed to be swapped.

Whats wrong with just throwing a plug n play in??

Say a Haltech E8 with pnp loom

I know of a Wolf 3D plug n play ECU to suit GSR/EVO1-3, prob get that for under $500

I thought it was a lot. But as I said I'm new to this. I'm glade I got on here to get advice!
About prices. I talked to meek and they said they have injectors for around $250 for 560cc. And there on the net for around, if not less. I've seen afm's from $100. I think it was a evo 2/3 one not sure about evo 7 one. And I saw a member had an evo 7 ecu for sale in 2011 for $300.
So yeah you can see my confusion. I'll talk to the guys at the workshop when I'm there next about the quote. I hope they made a mistake! If all it is, is the cost of parts, fitting them. And I gather that's easy, with some work wiring up the ecu. I think I remember one of the guys saying it should only take 3 hours to fit the ecu. Yeah so as I said I'll check again.
I'll ask them how much it will be to just fit evo 2/3 ecu, 510 injectors and afm. If I find them. Or even just fit afm and injectors if I go the chip way. Fun fun.
Now does $400 seem correct to get my ecu bayed, chipped and caps fixed?
And lastly. I think someone mentioned it. Would an evo 7 ecu need to be dyno tuned for it to run? Or can it be fitted and drive away. Get it tuned at a later date?
Cheers again

to do evo 1-3 afm injector and ecu you would be looking at maximum $500 for the parts. you'd need the following

any 609 labeled afm. ~$75 from a wrecker

a oval shaped upper intake pipe leading to the turbo 20 - 80 depending on where you look (member on her will likely have them for sale or for around $100 you can get an aftermarket silicone item ready to bolt in from ebay)

510 cc injectors. $100 - $200 (I'd also recommend a professional clean and service if they're not new usually about $35 per injector)

and an evo 1-3 ecu this is the tricky one i know for a fact you can get them for under $200 you've just gotta be patient and know where to look i bought mine for $150 on eBay inc shipping just make sure you get the RIGHT one as theres different part numbers for evo 1-3 and people try passing of dsm and vr4's as evo the guys on here can help you find a legit one

these 4 items are the easiest in the world to bolt in and if you can't do it yourself you have no business under the hood of your car they're laterally swap and go it took me all of an hours to put them on with a lot of just dicking about. probably the hardest part of this swap will be getting the afm onto your airbox without destroying the plastic that holds the bolts in place on the airbox side

the turbo is alil more difficult because it is physically larger, you'll need to
modify the waste gate actuator mount to clear the engine mount (on a 4g93T) if using a factory dump I'd recommend grinding off some of the heat shield mounts (it sits VERY VERY close to the oil filter i think mine actually fouled on it, it is for this reason I'd strongly suggest an oil filter relocation) and then you front pipe flange that bolt to the turbo will nee to be cut and rotated to suit the flange of the new dump.
it is also recommended that the exhaust manifold be ported to match the turbo but it is not 100% required (you will however notice a difference in spool time boost threshold if you do not)

once these are done you should have a very responsive and well performing 1.8l hell with just these mods and a 3" turbo back exhaust i managed a very lazy 13.6 second 1/4 mile time a whole second faster than that of the std gsr equipment

Yeah that sounds better then $2k.
My brother in law, who happens to also have a gsr, he's from SA but now is in the uk. Said he might be able to get en early evo ecu easily over there. I'll talk to him again.
All the info on fitting the turbo I'll pass onto the guys fitting it. We've already discussed some of the things. But the more info the better!
The intake pipe. When I got the front mount fitted they put a new one in. I think?? I'd put a photo up but can't work out how from my ipad.

Give me $350 (ono) and I will throw in a meek 055, 510 chip as well as the bay, caps and jumper. 055 afm is a magna oval one, same flow as a 609 but easier to find. With 3 month warranty.
But I still reckon get the chip for a 482 round late magna maf, or a 399 if you can stretch the coin for a evo afm. But they flow the same. And no worries about elbow (magna elbow is wrong angle)

I would say with evo7 injectors, afm and ecu, you can drive away on the std tune. A innovate mtx-l will tell you if its ok, and if its safe at boost on the oem tune.
The evo 8 ecu is more advanced, but probably not noticably.

Welcome to the club! This this talk about chips... old news!!!

I'd forget that idea and go straight for a late model EVO ECU.

I would stick with the e3 ecu, 510 injectors, afm. Also use the larger magna throttle body.

You will need to, hone the manifold to suit the larger tdo5 16g outlet, hone oil/water lines think I used a combo of eco/gsr or get braided, change the angle of your down pipe (or buy split dump an I can modify it for you if you wait lol). (may need oil relocation)clean and flow test injectors, also hone the plenum to git the larger throttle body. Also evo intake pipes to match tb and afm.

Then dyno tune.

Now you could spend thousands doing other ecu mods blah blah blah but.....

Doing these mods will squeeze the max power you would want to push the stock 4g93t anyway around 160-170 atw. And unless u are "investing" a lot of money this is far your best bang for dollar :)

In my opinion the easiest solution is the following:
Get an Evo 6 ecu around $150
Get 560cc injectors from Evo 4+ $100-200
Get a Alexi power fc Evo 3 patch cable (plugs into Evo 3 loom and plugs into Evo 6 ecu, so no need for stuffing around with wiring pins) $175
Get Evo 6 AFM $150
Go to a wrecker and get CE lancer AFM plug (female) $5 (make sure you get it cut with at least 2 inches of wire)
Get any AFM from early magna or cc lancer from the wrecker (for the male plug) $20
Solder the CE plug wires to the magna/cc lancer plug $50 at most from any electrician
All up $600 and is completely reversible if you want to go back to stock
Should run fine to run without a tune (will be rich as you are only using 1.8 instead of 2 litre)
Get dyno tune later.
Benefits: easy to fit (just plugging connectors)
Can revert back to stock really easy
Cheap
Evo 6 ecu can do all the basic important things (like dual maps, gear based boost control, no lift to shift, etc)

Cons:
Evo 6 ecu doesn't have some of the fancy auxiliary inputs of later ecus

If you look on the other oz Evo forum you can get ecu, injectors, and AFM pretty cheap.
Any apexi retailer can get the patch plug.
