Im driving up high st in Malvern this morning, when I notice what I think is a surveyor in a safety vest looking through his instrument.

I then notice that the instrument is only about 1-2 feet off the ground on a tripod and has a flash, camera and sensor hanging off it. A small steel box with cables running into it from this assembly is located about 2 feet away from it.

On the way back, I notice it has been relocated to the other side of high st and has 2 safety cones around it and is unmanned, with no car within about 5 metres..... I didnt have a camera handy.

Has anyone seen this before?

might be a noise camera

ie, loud car goes past, takes a pic - and then 2 weeks later off to the EPA testing station you go.

Ive heard rumours about these setups as part of that operation pipedown BS thats going on atm.

does sound a bit rudimentary though.

i had a guy taking photo's of me on the bike yesterday in the city.. i noticed him, and gave him the limiter... i dont really care if they get me on the bike. it's stock anyway... pipe that down!

edit: he was in a vest and looked all kinda dodgey..

Should have parked in front of it and "accidentally" reversed over it.

I've seen the same setup in Port Melbourne.

I thought it was trialing/setting up the new cameras they have to run your plates then 200m down the road and pinch you for not being rego/disqualified drivers etc. Seen it in action on Pascoe Vale Rd, Broadmeadows one night- damn they were pulling sooo many cars over.

Apart from the operator who was not a cop I did not see any uniformed police in the area.....

Similar, except it was nowhere near an intersection, inbetween malvern rd and Bourke on high st.....

And the setup I saw had the speed camera equipment ( like the fixed one on the left of the sphoto) actually on the tripod......

The setup I saw was 2 guys sitting in deck chairs out the back of a dark blue un-marked van, holding laptops behind similar looking tripods with cameras on them, nowhere near an intersection, like what Squiddy said

Theres 2 of them today on the corner of victoria and exhibition in the city with 6 operators and the same setup as will's photo.

here you go :)

Melbourne's new super Speed cameras

It's a cylindrical pole about 2m high with 3 Perspex stripes on it
(hidden cameras, one for each lane of the highway), and there's some
matching sensors on the far side of the road in the gutter.

When you see the stripes it means that there is a speed camera. The
locations for these new cameras are listed below. The one in question is
located at the bottom of a very steep hill.
Of course it is illegal for a radar or mobile speed camera to be set up
in these sort of positions but its ok if its fixed.

The only one on that list that I know is actually the new kind is on Maroondah Hwy in Croydon not near a intersection.

I had a one on one with the mythbusters guys about speed cameras and the only way was to block it out with light/flash of pointing straight at the lense to block/ distort it view, they said this way works but they dont condone speeding,

Are these cameras at intersections or on stretches of road?

Does the info mean the camera is on Burke Rd (for example) before the intersection of Prospect Hill Rd?

God, more of them. Hasn't Labor clamped down on motorists enough? The road toll hasn't dropped!

I think we had one of the worst weeks on the road in a while (5 or 7 people killed???) and even Ken Lay admitted that none of them were caused by hooning.

So does anyone actually know what these new cameras are for yet? Im tempted to get out and ask next time, but Im concerned I'll get an instant canary
