Got another piece of my mod puzzle today. A Nickel Sport EVO 3 exhaust manifold. I think it's the same manifold as GTpumps sells. Cost me $170 delivered.

There is a little grit left in it and there are a few corners to hit with the grinder in the collector area

I'm just going to give it a general clean up and polish before it gets fitted.

Also has anyone got a pic of the piece you have to take off so it will clear a VR4 steering pump?

Spent a few hours with the grinder on the manifold today. I smoothed out the transitions from the runners to the collector. They all had sharp square corners that would cause turbulence in the airflow. I got rid of them and tried to shape things to help get the air into the turbine housing as efficiently as possible.

There are some on this forum that will say it makes no difference at all ported or not, I'm not one of them.

Any port work that smooths transitions and helps to direct gas flow is going to make a difference

I have ported one for Ian's HSG. I can say that it certainly helps with response and spool, there was even a change in exhaust note compared to the old housing, his manifold ant turbine housing did start out with a fire ring though so

it might have made it more noticeable, either way it put grins on faces. ;)

Your port work looks awesome too man, nice smooth lines, and the collector approach is opened up nicely.

How are you enjoying the metal shards? Don't scratch your balls when porting steel, ask me how I know LOL

Mmm just for the taste of it. And the big black boogies...
After the first day I went and bought some metal work dust masks, so it only takes 2 tissues to clean my nose out now.

Update: The runners are half finished. As in the half I can reach is finished. I'm trying, without too much success, to track down some flap wheels with a 100mm or so shank on them.

Couldn't manage a decent phone pic, but the first 4 inches are all shiny.

and I did a bit more to the 1 collector. Out of the box it had a noticeably smaller opening at the end of the runner than the other 3. I figured its the longest run. It needs all the help it can get.

Nice!

I made up an extension for runner #1 using a piece of threaded metal, then I tacked a nut on a couple of flap wheels and viola!

They tend to vibrate like hell when they get a bit long so I had to go slow with it, but you should be able to get most of it using the extension.

Die grinding is addictive isn't it? LOL

Anything that makes the turbos job easier on intake and exhaust will help spool time, smoothness onto boost is all good in my opinion.
Once again benny, thanks a mill.... You're a champ, still very happy with it mate.

Another mod to look into is drilling and taping each of the outer exhaust manifold studs (only one each side) to the larger size same as the evo 1-3 run. The evo 3 style manifold should already accommodates this.
I did it as its meant to help prevent the manifold leaking at the corners as I had the manifold leaking, wasting energy.
A multi layer stainless steel gasket was also the fix compared to a generic one layer dimpled gasket.
Up to you, this was 5-4 years ago so do your own research and decide if its worth it.

Have fun
