So it ha been a while since I took the car out for a spin... Last time, I would give the car a bit of a boot, it would cut out, and then seem normal.. So since I was on the way to the mechanic, this didn't bother me... I had noticed it was leaking a bit oil, which is why I was going..

Got there, saw a bit of an oil patch, and he took it for a spin... He can back, and when he turned it off, we heard a leak.. Oil was draining straight out of the sandwich plate... So we got it on the hoist (which damaged the front lip and bumper) and fixed the problem.... Was just a nut that came loose...

So, last night driving, I give it a squirt... Car cut out, then I see smoke pouring out the rear... Then smoke coming out from under the hood... Shut her off as I come to the lights just near my place... She was sitting for about 30 seconds, then the light goes green.. So I quickly start her to get her off the highway, then shut her off to roll down the hills to get to my street..

Come to a stop in the street, look underneath and it is an oil bath... So grab a rag to see if there is any oil what so ever, pull out the dippy, and dry... So, had to spend the next 3+ hours pushing the car up hill to try and get her in my Townhouse complex car park, and hopefully my garage..

So me and a mate got it almost all of the hill... But were starting to struggle... Although there were lots of spectators on their apartment balcony's down the street, no one wanted to help.. Finally a guy out jogging was able to give us a hand to push it to the driveway...

Got it inside, and there is a bit of a massive ramp leading to my garage.. Even with a running start, my mate and I could only get it up 1/3 of the ramp, so we had to wait for reinforcements, as all the visitor spots on the ground were taken..

After a few hours, and a couple of Jimmy's in the garage later, a guy rocks up with a Toyota Surf... So he throws on a rope, and tows us up... So, a good bloke helped us out... Now today's mission is to try and find what went wrong... Put some oil in... And hope for no damage.... Only problem is I am sick, so don't know if this will happen b4 the weekend...

Anyway... Rant over....

Hmm ... May have to... But the only problem is trying to find the room for the oil cooler... My front mount is pretty big..

And the $$$ is not something to look forward to...

It shouldn't cost that much. I've always told people to stay away from sandwich plates. They are too unpredictable.
Hopefully you caught it in time.

i know that you are a bike rider as well.. if you have left a lot of oil somewhere, you can call the council, or RTA to get it cleaned up.

Sandwich plates usually have a plated steel double sided thread inside them. Its probably working itself loose from the alloy due to excessive heat from the dump pipe/oil. An oil cooler is good start, possibly trying to redirect the angle of the dump pipe or add some heat shielding might sort it out.

Yeah, but $300+ for the kit... Doesn't the oil cooler still have to use a sandwich plate also ... :?:

Yep, reported it to the cops... Drive past it today (on the bike) and there does not appear to be much oil there at all.. So either it was cleaned, or burnt by me before... Found the spot where I drained more oil in my street, but was more in the gutter as i was parked on the side of the road.. So may call that one in also.. Or just run down there and throw some sand/dirt on it....

Got the chance to jack her up and take a look ... Well, apart from oil everywhere, and the mess... but all bolts still in play ... So nothing loose...

But ... When looking at the oil filter, it blew the seal out .. :fuuuuu: .. Oil filter was not loose, but you could see the seal kinda hanging out (like a loose packed kebab) in one spot.. Filter was still on tight, so took it off... Popped the seal back in the filters groove, and put her back on ... Put in some more oil ... Started her up, and all good ... No leaks, no funny noises ... So by all counts she is fine...

Have left it sitting in the garage at the moment, and will put a Ryco filter on it ... But will leave as is, so I can get to the mechanic so we can put her on the hoist, and degrease and double check over everything ..

Coulda been worse, so I am a happy camper now ..

Easy fix. It's weird for the seal to jump out of the groove on it's own. Especially seeing it was done up tight. It must not have been in properly to start with and wasn't noticed.
I've done that once before, and on double seal before.....And I will never do it again.

Yeah, I think it is just a shit filter ... I can't remember the brand, but when I put it on, the mechanic had just got them in ... Was meant to be some sort of new design or something... Is meant to be the ducks nuts...

So yeah, back to good old Ryco ... I am just soooooo glad that no other damage came about ... It could have been a lot worse... But yeah, really strange problem to have...

for your oil down.. I would pop down woolies and buy a bag of kitty litter
get the cheapest white granulated type not the paper crap

glad to hear everything is OK

by sandwich plate do you mean that "thing" that is between the oil filter and the block with coolant running into it??
