OBD Reader in RVR

Hey guys,

I've tried searching but not finding anything under OBD in this RVR forum.
Took the car to the mechanics today for it's once over to know what to sort out.
Other than it running rich and cracked A-arm mount and a dodgy ass exhaust job the car is in excellent health, he was actually quite surprised.
He was telling me how hard it pulled, and it was only doing 7psi of boos which is awesome, plenty of room to move now! Hahah

So anyhow he went to plug into the ODB reader and couldn't find it, I spent 30mins looking for it with him but we couldn't find it.
Tried on the drivers side A pillar footwell where the fuse box is, under the kick panels, engine bay, under the dash, under the kick panels passenger side, behind the glovebox, behind the center console, in the console but nothing that looked like the ODB port.

Can anyone shed some light on this, does it even have one?

We did find the ecu thankfully they really know how to hide things in cars...
 
only checked the manual, not the car, will have a look tomorrow, the manual says the diagnosis connector is under the steering wheel, under the dash.

Like here. Strange you couldn't find it, maybe vr401 can shed some light?

It's on the drivers side pillar attached to the back of the fuse box. ;)

That's if you asking about HSG RVR 97-98 model :)
 
Oh man feel like an idiot, I recon we looked at that fuse box about twenty times, went out there tonight with the torch and boom, there it is!

Mines a hypersports gear, Jan 97 model, I tried searching high and low to see what the visual difference between the two is but could not.
My understanding is that OBD1 gives you better diagnostic's while OBD2 gives you lots of sensors.
I want to run ECM Tuner and I suppose that it needs OBD2, any clarification on the two would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea what it is, OBD1 or OBD2

I've struck this issue tuning RVRs and CC lancer/Evo 3 copies with ECM Tuning. While my Snap On scan tool does work with the OBD2 plug, that plug is of no use with ECM Tuning. These in between models dont seem to have the 12 pin OBD1 plug like the earler VR4s and the reflash plug in TR/TS Magnas and Lancers etc. You need this OBD1 plug to communicate with the ECM chip !! So its simple ... I solder in a OBD1 plug . Problem solved, and now I can communicate .

These mid 90's model seem to be a hybrid stuck between OBD1 and OBD2 , and it was a pain sussing them out at first. Just go to the wrecker or Pick a Part and cut a bunch of the plugs out of Magnas. Then grab a wiring diagram and suss out the Rx, Tx and earth wire positions in the plug. Its all do able.
 
Is the way to pick these in the crank sensor? those with a crank sensor are obd2 and those with a head mounted cas are obd1?
I think maybe all obd2 stuff had the crank sensor. Afaik this is when the usa went to obd2, the advent of the 2g engine and this coincided with the crank sensor because the head mounted cas was not obd2 compatible.
 
Well, all I know is that when I used to scan my rvr with evo scan I used obd2 open port 1.3U cable and it worked well. Even my bluetooth obd2 logger is working on rvr.
 
Hey VR401 , does your RVR have a steel case ECU or plastic case ?? I think around that 1996 era, they started to change between protocols and ECUs ?? Just like the changeover in the Evo 4 steel case to Evo 5 plastic case ecu .

All HSG RVR have steel case and the board comes with 28 pin chip like vr4's or evo1-3. I used ostrich to tune with tuner pro.
 
Other than pluggin it in, how else can you tell you have an OBD1 or OBD2 reader?
I see jack mentioned the CAS anything else??
 
reviving this, bought a bluetooth obd2 reader, ELMS one that torque pro and some of the other guys recommend.
It will connect to torque pro, my pc scan diagnostic tool but will not talk to the ECU. It says cannot determine protocol...
I tried the jumper mod on the OBD reader between pins 1 and 4 and it still would not talk to ECU, I did get the check engine light flashing code 24 which is a speed sensor fault apparently but other than that I'm getting nothing.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
VR401 you said you used the evoscan tool without issue is worth going down that route? I do have a steel case ECU.

Evoscan works fine. You need 1.3U cable.

As for bluetooth obd reader, i have one from ebay and i have torque pro on my samsung and it works too. I tested it on my evo 7, ford fiesta and nissan pathfinder and it works on them all.
 
I have tried everything to get this bluetooth reader to connect but it will not talk to the ecu, I have it connected but no information coming from the ecu...
I will go down the evoscan route then.
