Oil Leak from Exhaust manifold on the 4G93T

The Lancer is just about ready for rego, The plan had been to get it rego this week, but a run down the freeway showed up a few problems .
Hopefully this oil leak will be the end of it or the end of me!

The engine has been good, except for one oil leak. When I look up underneath the exhaust manifold I noticed some oil collecting along the exhaust studs.

I thought that it was the new rocker gover gasket not sealing , but this was not the case.
Then i checked the oil feed from the head OK
The oil feed at the turbo end all OK.

Worried that it could be leaking between the head and block, but the radiators alright and I doubt it would leak via headgasket and not show up in other ways.

Could it be from the exhaust ports? They dont seem oliy and surely if valve stem seals were stuffed it wouldnt leak enough to seep out through the manifold gasket.

I tried tightening the the manifold studs but this didnt help , I suspect the metal gasket is stuffed, I will replace it regardless.

Do the manifold studs pass into the oil galleries in the head? no these studs need some sealent?

I think that I wil ljushat its just change the gasket and hope that at any oil just leaks into the exhaust.

have come across this before can be a few things, valve guides might be shot . allows oil to follow the valves down. or if you rings are failing you might be getting abit of oil in the combustion chamber but usally it gets burnt ie black/blue exhaust smoke. how much oil are we talking ?

Not much, it takes a few days but eventually the oil collects on the crossmember underneath the engine. It was burning oil at idle but after it got driven last weekend there was nothing in the exhaust, didn't even smell like burnt oil, even when idling.

might be worth taking to an auto elec and putting an ega on your exhaust pipe.

Do any of the exhaust studs on a 93 protrude into an oil gallery in the head?

Cracked piston ring land or very worn rings or blow by. Do a compression test to check

Thanks for the input, Will get a compression tester. Dont really want to pull the engine out again

yes I think some of the studs do got through.....But it is unlikely they would leak much as the get hot enough to cook the oil in the threads and "seal"

give the turbo oil feed some close attention. the stock ones sometimes crack and leak a little bit right at the ends

Bumping a very old but similar topic...Anyone know what could be causing the leak pictured below on a Evo 1 4G63? This is the farthest end from the timing cover, so the leak appears to be at the top of the exhaust manifold between cylinder 3 and 4. Valve cover gaskets replaced and compression test all good and oil return line looks fine.

One of the studs is near / backs onto an oil gallery IIRC.
Needs to be taken out and rtv sealant used on the threads or similar, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah I was wondering that but from looking it sounds like it’s the bottom middle bolt so not these ones?
