my gearbox is leaking oil, it looks like its coming from the output shaft to the transfer case.

question is, is that seal on the gearbox replaceable from the outside by taking the transfer case off or is it a box out job?

cheers J

You should be able to do it with it on the car if you had a lot of patience and some small tools.Getting the new seal in should be easier to install over getting it out.

its your selector shaft seal and you need to take the box out to swap it

mine has been leaking for a year happened right after i changed the clutch - mechanic changed everything but the seal when he did the clutch and flywheel.
i just top it up with tranny fluid every 3months it stays pretty full

if you work out a way to do it with out pulling the box id love to know how

^^^ umm, the selector shaft seal is on the front top of the gearbox and the output shaft is on the lower back.
I'll have a look at a box that I have here to make sure you can replace that seal without having to drop anything. At the worst I'd say you will have to remove the output shaft to get at it.

I had a look at the exploded view in the manual stickied at the top and it is pretty hard to tell but it does look like its comes out from outside

if you can check yours it would be great mate :D

as for the leak.. i'm as sure as i can be without pulling the transfer case off that it is the output shaft seal, comes from right where it is and there was a drip there pretty much straight after putting the oil in

in saying that i put a drip tray under it over the weekend while i was away and there wasnt one drop in it this morning after i got back from tas (took the ute as i didnt wanna risk it)

Mine used to appear to be leaking from there as well, however the gearbox was dry when we pulled it off.
Mine was coming from the inspection plate on top of the right angle drive and leaking down in the same spot.

I've replaced that seal twice now, both while the gearbox was in the car. It's a pain in the arse to get the seal out (need alot of force and leaverage!) but easy to put the new one in.
