VMX80 is a mineral oil, the reason it works well is because it is the right spec. GL4. the one to use is castrol syntrans 75W-85 (full synthetic) not the 75W90 one that is GL5. Vr4, gsrs and i assume early evos require GL4.

Also for the engine maybe try some 10W-40 royal purple apparently its pretty good. I might try the 10W-40 synthetic Nulon stuff next service.

hey pete,

should the oils be the other way around?

ie 0w40 for winter use as its 'colder' and you need thin cold-start oil.

The factory recomendations for 4g63t engines is 10w-30 or 5w-30 in winter, and 20w-40 in summer.

Regardless, I use Castrol edge 5w-30 as it's the closest to factory recommendations (10w-40) but cheaper.

Actually for Australian conditions the factory recommendations are 15w50 all year round. 10w-30 and 20w-50 are only for japanese conditions where it actually snows and gets below zero.

Unfortunately, nobody has e1-3's with aussie owners manuals so it took a while for this info to filter. 10w-30 over here will create massive lifter noise.

Gearbox oil should be 75w90, I use redline mt90

In the factory maintenance book it says for temperatures above 0 degrees, 20w-40 should be used.
15w-50 is close enough I guess.
