Oils aint Oils

Help Support 4GTuner:

I agree with NOT using the thinner 5 weight oil for the older 4G63 engines, I would only use a 5W oil on a newer evo engine (maybe E5-6 & up) cause the tollerance's are just soo much better with a newer engine, you dont even need to run them in anymore. (But you do need not to go too crazy in the 1st 500klm cause the machining of a new engine is just that good)

So for an older engine use atleast a 10-15W also when you have a oil with a far greater rating like 5-60 (55 differance) it will be more tend to have a chemical break down in the way that it is made & protects your engine under stress ect, so choosing a oil with a closer rating of say 10-40W (Only 30 differance) will be more stable at "X" Temp/pressure/rating again if changing every 5000klms.

But again if your racing MOST of the time at high stress then you might be better in getting a thicker 50-60w oil. :)

Castrol magnatec here... lifters are still noisy when cold.

I use one step colder plugs ( 7s ) instead of 6s, and it runs/starts fine everytime.

i run magnatec aswell, haven't had any problems with it. lifters are still a bit noisey, more so when its cold.

the oil i got is working well the difference is huge but being that it is a bit thinner than what i used to use i get a little bit of liffter when it is really cold for like one second. it does not happen every morning only when it is cold enough that the dogs water is frozen over lol. so thats not to bad i guess lol.thanx for all your help

also what is this elf oil i am hearing about is it the shit or something

i tryed to get uchs but could not get it at repco or autobarn

My car is getting serviced tomorrow.. It's starting to get a bit cranky!

I shall try a different oil, and some engine flush, see how my lifters feel after it.

I could of sworn there was a thread, with a WHOLE heap of different oils tried and tested, and one of the replies was "you have too much money" ...

anyway, if anyone knows where it is, a link would be great :D

Not the thread I'm after mate, but thanks anyway.. I think it's on evocoupe..

ive tried and been happy with the newly released Nulon oils. ive been using the 15w40 in the galant, Still a little ticky but only when cold.
There use AAT (advanced adative technology) in there oils, Basicly there own adatives. and there full synthetic oils are fairly cheap to, $45 for 5lt.

I have tried pretty much every oil

mits recommend from factory 10W 40... penrite say go up a grade for older motors, i did and its the best I have come accross (including motul)

I use HPR15

www.penrite.com.au

i'm currently using the Motul 4100 10w40 semi-syn and it's pretty good except for just lately i've noticed very very noisy lifter noise on cold start-ups... so noisy

i'm also wondering if i shud go full-syn oil or not?? any info regarding this?

my motor has 64xxx kms on it...

theres pleanty of arguments about wether or not u should go full synth in a motor which hasnt always used a full synth oil,

depending on how well ur motors been looked after, if you have religiously changed the oil every 5k since new, & its got less than say 100k on it id say u could safely change over (why?)

virtually none of the motors any of us have were built with any sort of synthetic oils in mind, & if u change ur oil every 5k like u should then theres going to be no real world improvements of a $80 full synth oil over a $30 semi synthetic.

i personally use penrite HPR10 with a Z79A or equiv filter ( the smallest i could find) & have had no problems at all with start up tappet noise. my car takes a full 5L because my oil coolers been relocated & has larger diameter lines.

Well, regarding a full synth Oil, i gave it a shot. ( engine has approx 30 thou on it ).

Castrol EDGE, 10w-60, and my lifters WILL NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP..

so it's time to piss that off and go back to magnatec.

Magnatec in Canberra's cold does sh!t-all lads - just changed oil the other day hoping that ticking would disappear and no luck.

Something thicker I'm guessing would be better.

Garkus

anybody tried any of the following oils yet?

sin
edge

they are about the same in price
im thinking

0-40
or 10-60

i've only used magnatec so far but will have to switch soon..
i'm done with changing the oil so often so i want good stuff in there this time..
