Hi all, like the title says I'm an old noob in that in the late 90's I had a Cordia GSR and hated the lag of the stock motor, so bought myself a J spec VR4 front cut and fitted it to the Cordia. Took heaps of trouble to make it look stock and it turned out really well. Only mods on that were a switch operated boost solenoid to give me 15 PSI and a dump pipe off the stock turbo. Apart from the traction issues that car was great, untill a truck killed it.

Fast forward to now and I've bought a rough '92 A spec VR4. It was loved by someone then bought by someone who didn't care about it. I intend to bring it back to its former glory. It has a rebuilt head with 272 cams, a evo 3 mani and turbo running 20PSI, 510 injectors and a chipped factory ECU. It also has Meek intercooler pipes, a decent bar and plate cooler, a 2G AFM and a full mandrel 3 inch exhaust. Other good bits are a EVO 0 bonnet, a rebuilt box and a 4 bolt diff.

On the bad side it has light hail damage and a few car park dings, and the AC needs gas, and it had a bent front strut and the rears were saggy, and a leaky clutch slave, and stuffed leads and plugs, and no heat sheilding on anything, and half of the interior was in a box.

The problem it has now is that if I wind it out, by the time I get to the top of third I get mild knocking displayed on the dash. I'm definately want to fit a plug n play ECU to get the tune 100%, but I have a dilema. Do I fit a 20g at the same time, giving me lower compressor temps, or do I go for the doctor and go for a BB FP green? I intend to combat the extra lag (which I hate) with a good mainfold and dump, and a 3 port boost solenoid to hold boost off the gate.Thoughts?

Hey Lumpy, you are certainly in the right place! Welcome. Shame about the Cordia! They are such a classic shape. It's good to see you haven't lost your interest in these cars though. The A-spec sounds like a sweet pick up. What colour is it? Any pics?? 4-bolts and vented bonnets are pretty sought after these days!

I would start off by getting the car setup properly and eliminate any potential issues which might lead to you chasing your tail later down the track. The knock sensors located on the back of the block are notorious for sensing 'phantom knock' which tells the ECU a false reading which makes it retard timing across the whole table. If you have a feel on the back of the block you will feel the sensor underneath the intake manifold on the drivers side. If it's lost it's guts of the black sticky stuff then it's more than likely in need to be binned. You can source replacements online fairly easily. Using a datalogger like MMCD or EvoScan will make proper diagnosis far easier to achieve, and be handy for monitoring in the future.

The Big 16g only starts to get going above 20psi... with enough fuel, a tune and a decent clutch you should be able to get your new car to get up and boogie

Fabbed the airbox out of 1.5mm aluminium, replaced the melted stock plug cover, and wrapped the IC pipes in heat reflecting tape.

Forgot to mention the Fidanza alloy flywheel, button clutch and HD pressure plate. I fitted coilovers because of the dead struts and I'm pretty sure it has aftermarket sway bars too, because she stays nice and flat in the corners even before the coilovers.

Something else pretty high on my upgrade list is some adjustable cam gears to get the cams dialed in properly.

Welcome Lumpy :)
You're can never get too old doing the things you enjoy most mate... just more experienced ;)

Hi mate welcome

Where is this car now my mate had it not too long ago when he took me for a spin in it kind of went ok

It now lives near Parramatta. I found out that it used to belong to Matt Williams of Hot4's several years ago.
