You won't get an accurate length measuring both pieces together, because the tripod joint is free to slide in the cup.
Also one may have a longer inner shaft and shorter outer shaft but the same overall length.
You'll need to measure both parts separately.
Correct.
But what I'm looking for is on an average how much of a difference there is.
Main reason being the transplant of the 63 engine into my Magna is slightly problematic.
The current driveshaft setup leaves the Magna interm being bolted to a bracket, 45deg retarded, that is then bolted to the engine.
I'm hoping that if a vr4 shafts total length is less than 40mm off from the Magna shaft, then I could use the interm, and get a fabbed cv shaft made for the difference.
I know the interms never changed from 2wd to 4wd, so I can use it with the gearbox I have, splines, inner length and all.
This will stop the gearbox from leaking due to the seal never being properly seated.
'nothing fits as well as factory unless a lot of time is spent fiddling with a welder, etc.'
The width difference between an older galant or cordia is 65mm, so I'm hoping the vr4 is inbetween the Magna and early galant to work.
Long winded answer for an insight -_-
