Hi all,

I have recently had 2 friends drive my CC stock GSR. And on both of these separate occasions, have commented on how much it "Pings" in the higher rpm. I have been running optimax since I have owned it (3 yrs now) and have not known it to sound any different.

Is this common with other GSR owners ? Is there a relatively easy fix for the problem ? I guess a bigger exhaust and bigger injectors (with higher rated fuel pump) are obvious solutions, however I don't really want to make expensive changes at this stage.

Any feedback you guys can provide, would be great.....

ping

Have the car checked by someone qualified. It is not worth blowing holes in your pistons when it can be avoided.

If your car is pinging there's something wrong. Get your AFR's checked asap, you dont want a rod saying hello to the outside world.

Only really use BP 98. I have found it better than Shell and mobil.

I have had several mechanics drive it too and that is what is confusing. They never mentioned it, and I have not noticed any changes over the years I have been driving.

Eitherway, will be getting it looked at next week.

Thanks

Bennygsr

has anyone tried vortex 98?

supposedly when it came out in sydney the mixtures werent right and it was 101 octane not sure if they have fixed it up but worth a try still =)

ive tried optimax extreme good but not worth the extra money.

i read in an article somewhere that vortex was right up there with bp ultimate in regards to octane levels.

yeah definately will be trying it.

all the vwvortex sydney guys recommend vortex 98 and BP ultimate

you cant beat bp or the vortex apparently they are just a hell of alot better blend than all the other so ive been told from some reputable sources

I used to use optimax as i got more out of a tank then with BP Ultimate. But since vortex 98 has finally come to qld that's all i use. I get the best fuel economy out of it.....though i'm yet to hook up the pda to see what sort of results i'm getting from it.

yeah i only ever used bp ultimate in the evo.

with the golf i like to use mobil synergy 8000

but gonna try vortex 98

get it on a dyno ASAP & have the AFR looked at, Some people dont have "A EAR" for pining. (Do you know what it sounds like)
The best way to hear it is to have all the windows up & the music turned OFF, then listen for it when under power, as soon as you hear it get off the gas!!!! they dont call it death knock for nothing.
Pinging can be only very faint or it can be VERY Vilent & loud & also the speed of is can also differ from only a few like 3-4 pings to a crap load.
Also get the timming looking at too, if it's too far advanced it will cause it to ping.
Good luck.

I use vortex 98 just because its closest. However I read somewhere there is something in Ultimate that coates the engine for longevity.

Any truth to that?

Quick fix to pinging: Loosen an ic hose :p
Will run horribly rich but better for engine then pinging.

what is base timing set at dude?

get it checked out asap...

pinging usually sounds like marbles in a jar rattling around...

ouch if its pinging Stop changing gears at HIGH rpm... better yet stop driving it... u r killing your motor hardcore if u keep driving it while its pinging... Get it looked at ASAP

As for fuel i use mobile synergy 8000, thought that was the best (except for the price of it) but this vortex 98 sounds good... might have to try it when my car is finally on the road...

my vr4 used to ping on 15psi, but since haltech iv never heard it ping, not even when it was running out of fuel at high rpm's (dodgy pump setup)

since i moved to victoria from queensland, & have been subjected to the criminal fuel prices down here iv been putting united 98 10% ethanol into the car, & it runs exactly the same as when i ran ultimate & optimax all the time, & its the cheapest i can find, only 3-4c more than unleaded as opposed to 8 - 15c more.

i also run it in the passat & it gets bullshit economy on that ethanol gear, 650 k's per 55l tank, up from 450/500 that it used to get, (more highway drivin now, but still a huge diff)

Remedies to stop it include.

-Adjust your base timing.
-Clean the carbon off your valves/pistons to stop hot spots igniting your fuel before the plug.(Fuel cleaner, water etc..few ways)
-better petrol
-Less boost
-Richer fuel map
-Better intercooling.

Thats about all u can do.
My 4G63 runs +10 deg timing and 13 pound.I have an SAFC 2 which is adjusted up a bit richer than stock.
Ive never heard it ping.

Though.....
When someone in japan put the timing belt on one tooth advanced (read: Not Good.),it pinged at +3 degrees timing on 7 pound with a shitload of fuel thrown in.

Changed it and it stopped.

I now use Mobil Synergy 8000
I have got incredible fuel economy..500 k highway
And my knock levels are the lowest they have ever been.

Check to make sure that the vacuum hose to the fpr is connected. Simple mistake but I have seen a "qualified" mechanic miss it.

Thanks for all the replies.

To be honest, I don't know what pinging sounds like, so can't tell if it is indeed pinging, or just the sound of the engine not getting enough fuel.
So it goes without saying, that a lot of the things you are suggesting I check, I have not much idea about !

Anyway, had my local mechanic check it, and he said that the sound isn't pinging.

At my next service, will get Darren of AFAS to check it out. Just won't change gears at high RPM for the moment.

Thanks again
