Hi all,

Have been driving the lancer around for a couple of weeks now after getting it tuned and am stoked as to how it is running. Have been rectifying a few issues with engine mounts etc and all is almost sorted.

On another note,

Whilst driving down the highway the other day I decided to give it a good ol kick in the guts from 3rd gear at around 90k's. Hit boost fine and then all of a sudden seemed to be like an injector was fouling as the car seemed to cough/miss/fart and then run fine.. In saying that it did the so called cough maybe four or five times during that hit of throttle..

I have had done since then changed the spark plugs and also installed new leads, from what I can tell it has a decent fuel pump in the back and i have checked the injectors (They are yellow).

It has done the same thing since, being intermittent and only seems to do it in third and fourth gear under full load.. I have replaced the intercooler rubber hoses and clamps as they were aged also and happened to pop one off the other evening.

Anyone with ideas on what the issue may be.. I dont want to think that it may be detonation as I use 95 - 98 octane fuel all the time and am running 15 psi at present.

Cheers

Dan

Hi guys,

From what I have been told by the guy i purchased the car from it is a Walbro or a bosch 044 fuel pump.

The Fuel filter was replaced the day I purchased the car as I did a complete service on everything filter wise etc.

It is running a Malpassi reg, I have been told that they can cause issues when they age a bit??

The computer is a Microtech LT10s

Cheers

start with checking that the pump has actually been upgraded......also make sure it isnt a fake walbro{lots of info on how tell tell the diffrences is about just search} those fail giving similar results to what you have now. also If you can.....borrow a known working reg. aftermarket brand not that important just needs 40psi and rising rate. also check for kinks in the delivery line from filter to rail and dents in the metal line frim pump to filter
are the injectors cleaned

drive....problem still there? probably ecu or tune.

Just make sure that the plus are gapped correctly. .8mm is ideal. Also make sure your leads are making good contact as sometimes that air caught in the lead caps/boots can expand as the engine heats up so try and get the air out of the boots by using a screw driver to bleed the air out.

Apart from that, as stated above, check your fuel pump by using a gauge. Another thing to look into is a blocked exhaust.

I used to find iridiums broke down all the time above 13psi for me, changed to ngk coppers bpr7es and never had another issue.

Sounds like that may be the issue..

Before the car was tuned it was running stock boost. The plugs that came out of it were denso's i believe, they weren't in the best of shape but at the same time the boost was raised.. Will try running lower boost tomorrow and see what happens.. Fingers Crossed !!

I would check your plugs first! .8 is a good place to start
your setup is basically stock (hardware) so a BP7ES or BP8ES would be fine as far as your plugs go!

I would be dropping / checking the plug gap at .8mm or .75mm if it still misses with that then look at injectors. (clean and service approx $30 each)

It might pay to get yourself a good AF meter, Techedge do a good cheap one, dont waste money on an autometer one! you need wideband
it might be an over kill at the moment but you will find it is an important safeguard (providing you use it)

good luck!

Agreed with the above.
Start with the basics:
1. Check your plugs.
2. Check your fuel pump, I had exactly the same problem which only became apparent once the boost was upped. Turned out my pump was dodgy. Perhaps you got one of the fake walbro's. Id suggest you have a look at your pump first to make sure.

Thanks for all the info guys.. Have finally got in contact with Chiptorque and we seem to have found the issue.
After intial talks we went over the car and once I was told where the boost cut was set... bang presto there is your answer.. As a precaution the boost cut was set to 17 or so psi..

With all the cold air at night and a gfb bleed valve there in the midst it was spiking and hence the sudden jolt in the ass.. never experienced it before but am glad I now know the problem.

Am getting rid of the Malpassi for a new reg.. any ideas guys.. have been told the Sard ones are the go and to stay the heck away from turbosmart. Boost is now set to standard till i drop a decent boost controller in there.

The injectors are being flushed tomorrow morning whilst at work so that will give a little more peace and mind. The plugs have been gapped and all is good on that count also.

I AM CHASING A DIGITAL BOOST CONTROLLER.. IF ANYONE HAS ONE HERE THAT THEY DONT NEED WHETHER IT BE A GREDDY ETC PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Regards

Dan
