4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

If they are steel, bring em around on the weekend, I have two migs (with gas) at home at the moment. Or we have a mig set up for aluminium at work (Brendale).

Oh, sweet, thanks Rob, that'd be great.
Yeah, those gasless migs are pathetic.
Mine is so dud, it's doesn't even allow the use of gas, it's the type with the flux cored filler wire. In other words, rubbish. :D
I can't afford a fully fledged 3 phase MIG welder. I wish I had one, they are so much better.
Rob, I'll bring mine around to show you how crap they are..........well maybe I shouldn't give it such a bad wrap........it is GMC...... :p
Thanks for your replies fellas. :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, they're steel.

where in brisbane are you? if you are south side i could tig a bead on there for yuh! take me about 5 mins to do about 4 good ones... you want mild steel / S/steel or titanium beads :)

BTW you can get very good single phase migs for under 1 gorilla gas/gasless and if you add argon to your gas reserve you can do alloy too. but the cheap ones do have issues with the alley wire (cheap single drive wire feeders)

I'm about to buy a MIG ! The only thing i have left to buy now is a lathe and mill. Dad has those but i want my own!

well maybe someone here knows how to band some aluminium pipes(intercooler piping)???

just don't want to pay 500 for a intercooler piping when i can get 4m of 2.5 inch pipe for around 60 i think but cant find anyone that could bend them for me:(

MDK87, JetGSR is a lot closer to you than I am, take him up on his offer quick. :D .

I just bought a Tradetools cheapie mig, $370 including auto helmet. Cost $420 all up including spare tips and nozzles and some different wires (including 0.8mm gasless which I haven't had a chance to play around with yet). As far as I am concerned, it works (at present) just as well as my father in law's Lincoln $1500 setup that I have been using until now. The duty cycle isn't up there like the Lincoln's but I rarely weld anything over 4mm thick anyway so have not found it's limits yet. My only complaint is that the earth lead and gun lead are too short. The earth lead is easy enough to extend though.

Marek, rolling aluminium is not cheap, about $60 per bend if you get the whole length rolled to a constant radius, and you will need about a 3mm wall to do it. We use BJR (I think they might now be called Rollpress) through work but they do not like small jobs. You would be better off buying aluminium mandrel bends and having it welded up.

what about stainless steel is that easier/cheaper to band and weld???

i'm just trying to make it as cheap as possible:)

if i was going to buy manderel bends what sort of bands whould i need???

and what is the best place to get it from???

did you want to follow the stock route, or do you want to go custom, most aftermarket kits follow stock, but I think that you could get some better gains going with a custom route, smooth out the bends a bit more.

yes press bends reduce the diametre of a pipe

Marek, you can buy aluminium mandrel bends and donuts from ARE, or buy a cheap universal cooler kit of ebay. I have bought stainless bends from a pipe place at Geebung before.

i got mine from plazmaman in sydney, it cost 485 shipped, just make sure he doesn't bead the BOV pipe, or ask him to put the stock flange on it.

i don't really want to pay more then 300 for a cooler pipes.

you think i could make a setup for our cars from those universal kits???

would you huys know roughly what parts would i need as in how many 90 degree elbows etc???

have a look at the meek piping kit (below) it should give you all that you need to get the angles and whatnot.

Yeh I'm in the same boat as Marek would love to upgrade the intercooler but cant afford the piping. Any cheap solutions would be greatly appreciated.

they are both as expensive as each other!
Basically for every bend over 45 deg you will loose a %-age of power
Less pipe + less bends = better flow and more power.

But we know it isn't always possible

I still think the intercooler on the earlier evos was and after thought.

Is it better on the Evo10?

hey rob I was looking at that Mig too but i like the unimig a bit better only 120 amps but better quality also 700 bucks, The one you have was the 2nd in line correct? The baby one only took .6 wire.
