Hey guys,
Went to get a quote on a (functional) muffler, plus install, plus the addition of an extra flange in the exhaust so I can drop the diff without unbolting from the cat OR so I can attach a side exiting pipe :D

Anyway, I got quoted $520, with a magnaflow oval, twin 3" tip muffler. Dunno the model of the muffler. Although admittedly they are the first place to offer me magnaflow, most other places recommended a 6" cannon to shut the car up.

Is this a reasonable price? I know many people use magnaflows on their cars, in addition to the 30cm and 20cm resonators, will it be a worthwhile replacement?

Cheers.

i thought a cannon would make it louder!
i'm using a super cat oval muffler with 4" tip, nice sound and not too loud

sounds kinda reasonable, Dad and I just made up 3" stainless steel cat back exhaust the other day for my car, took us best part of all day to get it all sitting right and have the hangers correctly positioned and weld everything up, I guess it will depend on what the pricing of the muffler is and if they do a neat job that wont crack, scrape on the ground, or break.

$500 for a muffler???!!!

What a rip off!!

Im also in the market for a muffler at the moment, i'm wanting a 3" in, with 2x2.5" outlets, like what WRCVR4 has on his car (which is also a magnaflow)

Thanks :D I got quoted 300 for a no-brand cannon from another place. So the best bet is what, try to find the muffler for a reasonable price and then get someone to install it. Suggestions as to where to look? Ebay seems hopeless here.

Ah so if you're looking, maybe some sort of group buy? There must be a certain size of magnaflow that works well for out cars, I've read mixed reports of them, some people say they are quiet, some people say they are extremely loud.

That pretty much the muffler im lookin for too. Except not droopy tips. Just 2 x2.5" SS straights not rolled coming out of the muffer.

D&T salisbury wanted like $390 just for the muffler.

I went to ET the other week about the addition of the largest Magnaflow oval and another resonator. They quoted me "about $400-450".

I went to another shop (usually who I go to and quite reasonable) and they were talking upwards of $700!!

I say give ET a call

You can get a titanium tipped HKS muffler for that kinda coin!

I've got my eye on a muffler on ebay, fingers crossed it wont cost me $100 delivered, so that can leave me more money to go faster

ANYTHING has got to be better than the one i've got now though- it's asking for trouble with the cops

Yeah I could get a HKS muffler.. but how quiet will it be? The droning bass note is extremely noticeable, and I really don't want to spend any more money on the exhaust, ie, if I get a muffler I want it to be the last one I have to get until it's dead.

I'd rather go an oval muffler, and it seems the majority of them (in straight through design) aren't packed very well. Although almost anything has to do more than the current muffler hehe... good question I suppose would be to WRCVR4, how quiet is your car?

I got a quote on a twin tip, 3" in oval muffler about 2 years ago from AVO in Cheltenham (just going thru some papers and came across it) they make them themselves if I remember correctly, and that was only $220 so they might be worth a try as the quality was built to last a life time.

520 sounds better than it did the other day, and I am lazy and will of course check out the muffler properly before I fork out. Do you reckon they can "test fit" it? Sounds impossible to me, but I dunno how exhaust shops work.

Also Clutz if you don't win the muffler you can certainly buy my old one for less than 100 dollars delivered to your door :D (Think how much you can save by already having the VR4 hangers attached to it hehe)

Don't get me wrong, it works well, (no ricey rasp) just not well enough for my tastes.

Pics? I dont own a VR4 though

I'll have to measure the inlet, but no baffles, it's straight through. No internal y-pipe though, theres one in and two out pipes.

Got some photos for you the other day on the car, it's taken off now so I'll take some photos of it by itself. I'll even wash it :D

Got the magnaflow installed.. sounds exactly the same (which is good) but is quieter. Admittedly not a LOT quieter, but less droney and especially at idle it is very good now. Overall the car doesn't make as much noise, so well worth it.

Dan, if you're considering getting one, we'll have to meet up and you can see what you reckon.
