ok. now for the last 4 nights i have been chasing oil leaks on my jspec vr4, and after ripping the exaust manifold off last night, the oil is all down the right hand side of the block (front of car) starting at the head, is it common for vr4s to blow head gaskets between oil gallary and atmosphere, or even do a head gasket at all...
anyways im gona clean it and run it up again just to be sure.
is there anything special to do or look for on head removal on these engines.

thanks

does the leak originate from the head gasket area down? cam cover seals are known to leak which is an easy fix but thats up higher and you would notice the starting point for the leak,if your going to remove the head then its always good practise to use new head studs instead of reusing old ones-if you can afford to replace them then do it otherwise not absolutely needed.

if your going to do your head may as well do the valve stem seals and maybe re ring the pistons at a minimum, and as NZVR4 said arp head studs

You make it sound like a walk in the park!

Before you go all out and take the head off.....try the simple stuff first.

If the engine is performing ok and has no signs of a head gasket failure other than the leak you ahve mentioned. try to seal it from the out side by throughly cleaning the oil off using a solvent and applying a good sealant to the join.

the other thing to `consider is it may not actually leak there at all.........on one motor Ive seen the oil running down onto the exhaust mainifold then onto the block..... the residual oil on the manifold/head burned away due to heat but left a stain. the block oil stayed and accumulated to look like a head weep. replaced the cam cover gasket .....solved.

it's not hard, if i can do it anyone can

im gona give it a good clean today and run it up, i replaced the rocker cover and gaskets just 2 weeks ago (for the first time in 2 years its not leaking) so there is a good chance it is residual oil, altho even after cleaning and running it for a while from undernieth it appeared to still run down. other than the leaks it seems to run fine, so im not real keen on doing a head gasket, mainly due to lack of funds, altho i would also like to the stem seals and lifters replaced, so after my clean and run if its still looks to be head i might try abit of ultra grey as it has a good oil resistance and high temp rated.. and i have "borrowed" plenty from work :)

i let it run for half an hour last night and tonight, and i beleive its safe to to say the head gasket is ok, but there is a slight leak around the right hand front corner around the alternater which runs down to the oil filter, it does not look like power steer, but it looks like it starts somewhere around the inlet pipe to the back of the water pump, but as i said very slight, only about a drop but i hate any leaks.. any suggestions
