Ok so I'm bored at the moment and looking for a project, so I've decided to learn how to weld.

Now. What to weld? Well I've always wanted a racing cockpit for my games since I had an old Thrustmaster to play Need for Speed 1.

So now I'm making it a reality. I looked at my options a few years back. Playseats are pretty cool, but steep at around $600 plus postage plus the cost of a Logitech G25. The missus would never let that fly.

I found this thread:

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=653261

And asked Dean, the designer if he wanted me to make a prototype. This is what I'm hoping the finished product to look like, with the addition of a bucket seat..

So I've bought a Logitech G25, and a seat, and after doing a heap of cuts and spending some quality time in the shed learning to weld this is the story so far...

The welding in the second pic was the most haggard shit ever. I don't know what it was but I was terrible that day. Came back the next and filled up all my holes no problems. I don't get it I'm so inconsistent.

Anyway that's where I'm at. I'm hoping to get a heap more done this weekend. I'd like to mod my G25 so I have a handbrake on it for rally/drift games. Apparently it's easy but if anyone has done it let me know.

one image not working? i like it though...

if you want to go even further later... lets make the entire thing tilt with the game and things like that... would be fun...

Yeah the design of it seems pretty good but would probably be best made out of alloy or chromoly alloy for weight savings and moving it around. You'll need to be pretty good with the welds to do it though. The finished product would then be anodised or powder coated :) Are there going to be left and right channel speakers in the rear headrest? :)

Rear section almost finished.. just bogging it all up. Need to run some flat bar or some thinner profile RHS along the base to mount the seat on.

It's actually very light as it is. It's only 1.6mm steel. This will just be a rattle can finish in rustkill.. Probably "Hammered Metal" or something.

Haven't thought about speakers yet, but wouldn't mind at least a sub rumbler mounted somewhere.

i wouldnt bother modding the G25 just in case it dies and you have to get Logitech to replace it. they wont touch one that has been modded... I was thinking of getting a cheap joystick and using that as a handbrake, but i havent got around to doing that yet.

Good work with the racing cockpit too, i made one but used wood because it was easy and cheap... which helped get it past the missus! it doesnt look as good as the one you are building, but it does the job lol

what games are you playing?

at the moment grid. to be honest i haven't been playing many games lately at all.. but i imagine with this finished it will boost my keenness to play ps3 again haha

ahh yeah ive played Grid on mine a bit but im more into racing sims (i use mine on the PC)

cant wait to see it finished :)

How the hell are you going to in and out of that thing? It would be funny to watch someone half pissed try and do it :w00t:.

Paging Sivart!, he has made up one of these outta MDF tho for his PS3, I had a go a little while back, made it more fun :)

The steering wheel mount actually flips up so it shouldn't be too hard.

That is assuming you're under the age of 40.;)

My dad is 53 and after the amount of time I've spent trashing his shed he'll be getting into it even if it kills him haha.

The time involved in building one of these things is ridiculous. Probably could have been cut in half if all of the cuts were straight or 45's but what can you do.

I messed up the steering wheel mount - the wheel doesn't meet the holes at the back which sucks, so I'll have to do some modding to make that work too. That said, I'm hoping to get a coat of paint on it next weekend but I'm getting shipped off to Melbourne for a couple of days which will slow down any further progress. grrr hahaha

there worth the wait, mine heaps of fun, I did mine in MDF, but I had to make it easy to pack away, as its in my lounge room

grid is my fav for Ps3 at the moment, till Gt5 comes out, or if it does ever come out
