hey guys,
my radiator fan doesnt seem to work anymore, ive checked fuses/relays in the engine bay and they all seem fine. the fan works as ive powered it up direct to battery.
is there something ive missed? another relay that is connected to get the fan running?
cheers guys

If you unplug it when it's at temp it should run constantly. Perhaps try your coolant temp sensor aswell, could be faulty.....

check the temp sensor at the bottom tank of your radiator this is also the switch to turn the fans on. to test it pul the plug off and bridge the plug with a piece of wire. if the fans turn on then but do not turn on when plugged in and at operating temp there is a good chance the switch is rooted.

Or on the rear of the thermostat housing there is a sender unit which runs the fan... It is a copper probe..With a black plug on it. I found this was the problem when the Mrs GSR had the same symptoms as you...

i thought that one only ran the temp gauge on the dash, on my GSR that one only stuffed the dash temp the fans worked as normal

Youda I think your talking about a different probe(see 2nd pic)-but I do know that on my mrs car, which had the same symptoms as Rickii, that changing this probe/sender sorted the problem of the radiator fan not working and the car getting hot??
I should perhaps mention that this is on an Evo 3 motor not a GSR...Pretty sure it's still the same from memory...
Anyway I took a couple of pics for ya Rickii, to show what I'm on about...

This is the probe out of the car...

And this is it mounted to the car at the back of thermostat housing...

If it turns out to be that... I have 3 spare ones here if you need one!!!

And Youda... You sure your not talking about the smaller plug in the top right of my second picture?? That is where the temp signal for the dash comes from, I always thought...??

I dont know if the evo is the same as the vr4,but that all sounded like what happend to my eterna.unplug the sensor at the radiator and bridge the two connections on the plug, your fans should come on with ign on.If that dosent work,i had a bad connection on the plug for your radiator fans/temp probe to main loom.in the vr4 it is a 6pin plug between the radiator and battery tray, one pin for the fan was tarnished so it had volts but no current.

May I ask how you know its no longer working? is the car overheating? is the cooling system full and no leaks?

wow those are way different to mine one my GSR or my VR4 evo zero motor

Evo/VR4 have different radiator setups to GSR.
The GSR has a temp sensor connected to the radiator which controls when the fan comes on.
Rickii, I remember you saying you had a 93T in there at one stage, have you still retained the 93T radiator??

cheers for the prompt replies guys, i'll have to pull that sensor off my car underneath the thermostat.
dean, i got a 63T radiator so thats all good..
richard, the car overheats, reaches warm temp but the fan doesnt come on.
jamo, thanks for the pics, how do i know if my sensor is rooted? i might take up your offer of one of those sensors if i can figure out if mine is gone.

so im looking at 2 different sensors now? one underneath the thermostat and the other at the bottom of the radiator?

Yeah man your problem is the one behind thermostat.. If you have eliminated all the other sensors and relays, which you said you have, then it's that one in my pics for sure. I did what you did and checked them all one by one and once I replaced the probe I'm on about the problem was solved...
Youda- we are talking about 2 different things as I thought!! Have a look at the back of your housing you will see the probe pictured...
Dean-you sure they are different?? In my experience they are not.. The loom plugs in when doing a conversion- so I think your wrong this time buddy!! Even ordinary cc lancers have the same setup?? That's where I got the spare probes from!!??

We're going off topic. But yes they are different, ill try get some pics to show you what i mean.
The part i'm talking about and the part you're talking about jamo are two different items. My reply was to the o/p.
Heres a pic of a radiator from a GSR. You can just see to the bottom left of the bottom hose the screw in sensor. Thats what I was referring to. This sensor is what controls when the thermo fans come on/off. Evo Radiators dont hae this screw in sensor on the radiator.

Still disagree...The loom is the same between the both cars,is it not??(in relation to the plugs I mean)

I know we are talking about different things, but, they still run the same probes in the same place... Therefore they must be the same setup?? I have done the Evo conversion to a GSR and all my plugs went back where they came from with none left over or not used...
I can post as many pics as you like to Show you if your still in doubt???

Yes im sure it will plug in and im sure that the probes are the same.
But thats not what my post is saying lol.
Perhaps the difference in what we are talking about is an ECU thing then?
I retain the GSR Ecu, but use an Evo radiator. When you did the conversion did you change ECU's over and radiators over?

LOL... I didn't change the radiator... I still have a gsr Ecu which has a different chip in it...

Either way... As long as Rickii gets the fan happening...
The plug you mention at the bottom of radiator ties into the probe I'm on about . If one is fucked the whole cooling system doesn't work.. All I have been saying, all along, is that if he's checked the one you are on about, and it's not fucked, then the probe I'm talking about is the culprit...That is what I found on the Mrs car when she had the same symptoms as Rickii.

Hope that clears up the confusion....

Na man there's no arguement!! I think we have got to the point of the matter, in a civil debate!!
Always good to share opinions..As well as experiences-that way, somebody will have the answer to the problem....lol!
In other words Rickii has plenty of things to check on from everyones input!!
Make sure you let us know the outcome once you work it out too Rickii!!
