Hi all
I run a VR4 RS gravel rally car and after an "excursion" into the scenery (hit a stump on the rh front ,bent control arm, tie rod etc) the gearbox that was perfect before now jumps out of reverse with the slightest load. checked all cables, bushs linkages etc all good feels to engage fully at the selectors, was told by an experienced vr4 gearbox man that the reverse idler lever will bend if "punished" pulled gearbox down and all looks ok nothing bent, broken seems to engage reverse ok? any ideas guys? was perfect before crash?

Cheers

G'day. Check the bracket that holds the cables on the gearbox. It may be bent where the cable that selects the actual gears goes through. If you need a pic.

Part number 23901.
Or the actual levers at the end of the cable. One of those may be bent.

Bracket and levers are in this pic.

Select reverse and disconnect the linkages at the gearbox. If that stops it popping out then its between the linkages and shifter. If its the same its internal.
yeah did that, jumped out. have a spare RS box that was of "unknown" condition just pulled that apart and checked reverse idler lever against the original one, yep its bent!
spare box looked like its just had a rebuild! still had assembly lube on the gears/bearings etc reassembled it and its going back in the car. Old box has had a hard life and due for rebuild. wouldn't mind giving it to somebody that can convert it to EVO 3 specs (double synchros etc) whos the best??
