I need two new units, single din preferred. All they have to do is play the radio and flac files from a usb stick....simple :) ................but do you think I can find any

Does anyone know of any head units which can do these basic functions? And no, I don't want to re-rip my whole music library and no I don't want to have to have an mp3/flac player plugged into the analogue inputs on the HU.

Cheers,
Rob.
(been out of the car audio game too long)

I hate protected wma files. Made over 1000 CDs as a kid as wma. They r protected files and won't play on head units with wma. And can't find any way around it. Files can be a pain

Rob a JYC head unit can play your stick in random etc.
Gianni use dbpoweramp music convertor to convert them to lame mp3s or flac etc.
Cheers !

I just got an alpine one for the civic - USB and aux (ipod) input on the front cover and it was only 150 odd bucks.

A quick search reveals that apparently the only head unit that does it is the URAL ConceRt CDD. Never heard of it, it's russian and don't know if it will work here. But i'm sure you're internet savvy enough that you would have found that already. Just scrolled through here (http://flac.sourceforge.net/links.html) and found it.

I have a JVC KD R905 = http://www.jvc-australia.com/JVC/client/c_products_details.jsp?catID=27&prodID=477

Bought mine from here for $350 I think. --> http://www.ryda.com.au/JVC-KD-R905-Car-MP3-Bluetooth-Ipod-Tuner-p/kdr905.htm

Pro's. Awesome unit, easy to use, easy to install, anyone can use it really...

Con's. Handsfree is average, Audio over Bluetooth is average, iPod/iPhone control is average

for what I wanted it does the job.

Yes I've seen those Jason, thanks.

But does it play flacs?

I've been through all the JVC range, if they play flacs, they certainly don't advertise it. Can you confirm that they can please Aldo, and which model?
Damn I thought the newer models could Rob. Sorry about that. I chucked a flac file on a stick & tried JVC, Clarion & Kenwood = no go.
I get plenty of flacs from overseas & I convert to wav, edit in cool edit pro, save as wav & then dbpoweramp them to lame mp3s.
Rob use dbpoweramp to batch convert them to lame mp3s & then batch throw them into mp3gain set at 98db. You'll be happy withum.
But I do know that JVC will play your stick in normal mode & random mode. I have tested that & it's fine.
If you use a dvd with over 600 mp3s in random, the firmware can't remember the files already played & you do get repeats. But it's still a goodin'
Cheers !

Thanks Aldo, but considering that I have over 2 terrabytes of flacs at home, and you can imagine how long that took to rip, I have absolutely no desire to go and convert them to mp3's and take up even more storage space.
I can't believe that the car audio world still hasn't come up to speed with things that have been around for ages in home audio. <_<
