Rego'd In SA??

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

It would probably be impossible. It has to be inspected at regency. Generally they give modified interstate cars a hard time - and this one would be impossible to register as it's more than a 20% increase in engine power.
Plus it has roof rust

Yeah, very hard time getting that through Regency.
Generally an ID check on a near stock car goes smoothly, but as soon as they realise it has rims/lowered/fmic they look a lot harder. Let alone a different engine!

I had a mate trying to get a Cordia through, took him 3 times just to get it bloody registered.
That Borg would be nearly impossible to get through.

I'd give them a call and ask... if it was factory turbo (4g61t), then I don't think they'll give you as many issues... you'll have to de-tint the windows before you take it through, also the steering wheel probably isn't legal either. So long as it has the factory airbox, all the emissions are connected and it isn't all loud exhaust/massive frontmount.. should be ok.

Roof rust shouldn't be an issue as long as it doesn't go through the roof, if it's just on the surface that's fine. Maybe sand it off before you take it to regency and paint it with primer.

They can tell the engine size upgrade by the engine numbers... I'd just call and ask if it's an OK swap and explain all about the car (don't tell them about performance upgrades, just basically explain about the original engine and the swap, what car the swap comes from, and the horsepower rating difference between the two - you don't need to disclose that it's an RS engine, and they won't know, a VR4 2l turbo is 195 horsepower) Is it currently registered with the VR4 engine?

Things like the suspension etc, so long as it's not too low (they will be able to tell you over the phone how low it can be)... I dunno, I don't think you'll have that many issues, it isn't a skyline afterall. Just call them and ask.

I rang up a while ago when I was looking at an interstate car.

Explain the situation to them..

"I'm looking at buying a car from interstate but it's had an engine conversion but the old one has died. The new engine is a similar engine, it's all bolt in", but it's a bit more powerful. The brakes have been upgraded to suit. Can you send me the paperwork to fill out so that I can get a statement of requirements?"

They did this for me and it was perfect. Basically told me everything that I had to do for that engine conversion. Of course you'll still need to make it legal in regards to any other modifications that have been made (I didn't take a good look at the link) so making it a bit more stock would be your best option.

I'd still call them. People say you can't get through regency with coilovers, I did, big custom FMIC and polished piping, didn't even care. So what have you got to lose by asking?

So how much power does a 4g61t make? Anyway the modification guideline is very vague, I don't see which part limits the power output increase to 20%? The engine is still a 4g6 engine, should weigh the same, and their biggest concern is braking effort.

Shit... haha.

So you still reckon its worth giving regency a ring?

If its going to be a big hassle then I think its just worth trying to find one here... Then again, that could be a big hassle in its self!

Cheers for the feedback.

I am certain you will have to produce Regency with a dyno chart aswell as an emissions test. Just because the upgraded engine may have more than 20% power as stated from the factory, doesn't mean that that particular engine is 20% more powerful. There is no reason why you couldn't restict the exhaust to cap power just to get you across the line - it worked for me.... :)

thats true, Im wondering if all this messing about with regency will cost a few dollars, epecially with the rust, It might be more uncomplicated and cheaper in the end to find a decent one in SA..

Opinions?

Good luck with that......

I've never heard about this 20% difference in power thing? How long has this been around?

I'd still call them and ask if you can get away with it :D
