I'm going through the processes of getting my evo1 as legal as possible without going to extremes so the first thing I did was go and get a hiflow 3inch cat installed as the exhaust was straight through...that's one thing out of the way!

Next thing on my list is reinstalling the battery in the boot coz it's a complete mess! It's a lead battery hasn't been vented just sitting in a box with speaker wire used for the negative :\ very dodgy! So I plan to get a dry cell battery probably an optima, weld a metal plate to the boot floor and weld some rods to it to hold the battery down, then I'm changing the wiring to 2guage and installing a fuse. Is that the right way to do it? Is it illegal to have a battery in the boot in Vic even if I do it like that?

It needs to be vented. If in boot I recommend buying a battery box and hooking a hose into it which leads out of the floor through a gromet.

And as far as high flow cat to pass an emissions test it needs to be 400cpsi. End of the day it depends on why ur doing it. Battery I'd do properly. Cat is up to u :)

True. But weather or not it's legal still is a different issue. That ibdont know :) anyone got the road worthy book on hand?

same rule apply as it would under the hood battery must be secured. insdie a sealed box and vented to the outside of the car. even if the batery is a sealed type these guidline must still be followed as a sealed batery. "can swell/leak gasses"

Hmm so if I do vent it how big does the hose need to be? If it's going through a grommet I would imagine the hose would be pretty small. I'll keep the box and just put the rods through the bottom of it.

Depends. U can get very large grommets. Also depends on the size of what the box allows. If u rip ur spare wheel out u will see some rubber stoppers in the floor. Same are on tr floor in the cabin. U can drill out a hole in the rubber to fit the hose if u want. I put mine where the spare tire was :p

Yeh I've got a shitty space saver im thinkin of taking it out and putting my battery in there but I know one day I'm gona get a flat and I'll be kicking myself haha

Yeah. Probs won't have room if u want ur tire. But u can still run hose down there and keep battery on top

i had room for a tool box and a beach towel/bath blanket(very big towel was there for emergencies could double up as a shock blanket) in my spare wheel well (lancer coupe). but that's not quite as high as a batery.

all you'll need for venting it is some vac hos say 3mm diam should be plenty.

Fairly simple

Here is my setup, i made a false floor, then cut the floor and sat the battery box inside, so its sitting on the floor pan, then drilled holes for the battery holder rods, no need to weld anything and its stiff

If you have a dry/gel cell then theres no need to vent it, only vent for lead cell batteries (i wouldnt even throw a lead battery in the boot)

Here is a guide if you get stuck

Sweet. Wreckers here I come. On the topic of speaker and boot. How do u stop speaker hitting the boot lid hinge setup. I had to use spacers to lift them up, by the looks of yours they are flat and stock. Alot cleaner
