Replacing lifters

Hi Team,

Looking ad doing the lifters in the ol HSG as they are starting to tick, (me off).

I've seen this video that makes doing it without removing belts etc look simple :

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on it? - Also part numbers if you have them, I'm thinking the lifters with the 3mm hole are the way to go?
Should I be looking at getting a special tool to remove the rockers?
Has anyone had a crack at this themselves?

As a side note, can anyone recommend some good gearbox oil for older transmissions?
 
Hey mate, I got those top line ones and ordered a tool from Meek and did it to the RVR before selling it :( Got the tool in like 3 days if not 2 and got the lifters in around a week.

Get the Special tool mate and don't bother with that blokes you tube vid. Trust me it makes life SO much easier with the tool and will only take 1h to do.

Just prime the lifters with oil then drain them and make sure to rotate the motor (always clockwise) so your valves are up so your cam hasn't got a lobe pushing down on the valve and you're all sweet.

The lifters will still make a heap of noise when you take it for it's first run. Just give it a run, not revving high for a few kms and eventually they will prime with oil and shut up.

There is a how to on DSM forum and they say to drain the lifters after priming. One thread I read somewhere said that it doesn't have to be done and you should just leave them full of oil. I'm not one to take risks so I did it the way these blokes said.

yeah I used a big screwdriver today. Still did the job ok I guess? Taking them out today wasnt too bad with the instructions in the link from Django. We'll see how getting them in tomorrow goes...lol
 
Did mine a month ago after watching that vid with no problems. I used 2 screw drivers, One to lift and one to push. Used a cloth to stop them from flying. One thing I learnt quick is that there are 3 large oil 'holes' leading to the sump,, use a few cloths to block them. Also be aware of where your cam lugs are, in certain positions they will prevent you from removing the lifters. So you remove them eight at a time and then quickly turn the engine over to reposition the cams. Just be ready for a shit load of noise when you first restart your engine until the oil works up in them. I left mine idle over for about half an hour , then went for a run to the pub. By the time I got back, all was quiet.

...so you let it run for like an hour? hour n half? Mine wouldn't quiten down...I think that maybe I didn't let it run long enough coz I know I didn't run it for as long as you did.
 
Just did my lifters in my 4g63t. I bought topline brand from the states. Took 3 hours with screwdriver and I tapped the rockers back in gently with socket extension and hammer. If I did it again I would use a rag where I was levering the screwdriver as the metal around the spark plug holes is a little damaged where the rocker cover seals. Hopefully still seals ok.

Sorry about the late reply Quknez. I just let it idle over bout half an hour and they were still noisy as, so I jumped in and took it up to the pub and back. By the time i got back, they were fine. maybe by taking it for a run I built up the oil pressure? not sure, but it worked.
 
Two big screw drivers and big bore lifters (bigger holed ones there are 3 types for 4g63) pry them out and easy done just soak them in oil for a few days before you put them in.
 
feel bad for all you guys having to spend hours trying to pry and prod, risking damaging something so if anyone needs the lifter tool, I've got one, I'll take 10 bucks plus postage, used once, good nic.

Yeah that's the one South, I got it from Meek. I had a PM come through earlier than your post so it's sold pending payment, sorry mate, I have to go with first in best dressed, your next in line if it falls through though.
