I was driving along Canterbury road yesterday and just over a rise there was a popo road block that funnelled three lanes into the centre lane where a sensor on a tripod about 1/2 meter off the road was scanning (I assume the number plate but maybe more) the front of all cars in the queue. There would have been 50 cars at the time and the lane went about 20 meters where there was a number of popo pulling over some but waving most through.
So, If the sensor was scanning number plates for unregistered cars or registered cars owned by suspended/cancelled drivers then, as there were five cars and a truck pulled over at the time I went past then I can't believe 10% of an arbitrary bunch drivers are in that category. If not then wtf is the sensor testing for?

sensor is for checking registration and obviously if a registered owner shows as suspended it willl be flagged aswell.

You would be suprised of how many people drive cars wihout rego.

You may have just seen a lucky bunch, usually its not that much, I have been through with 30 other cars and none pulled over..

Fair enough then, didn't realise it was such a prevalent thing driving unregistered.
Thought the sensor might be checking ride height or maybe other things.
It it a camera or some digital device with a specific purpose or both combined.

they'll usually have a sheriff there too for people with warrants etc they do it alot in werribee and there was one just today in geelong saw about 9-10 cars being towed...

Ok, this is making more sense now. I've never come across it before but see where it is what they might do.
So paranoia is not necessary if you keep your nose clean.

Do you guys have point to point cameras in VIC?
It's where the computer takes a snapshot of your numberplate at one point on the highway, then takes another photo at another point further down the road. It calculates your speed over that distance to check if you were speeding.

Yeah. On eastlink I think. Although. A cop car was cruising along next to me. I wAs on 100 and he ended up off in the distance in a matter of minutes

p2p cameras are only on the hume north of cragieburn or whatever and the other point is near seymore. Driven thru them plenty of times. Eastlink just has regular speed cameras.

They have 2-3 of those numberplate checker things permanently attached to brawlers (mercedes vito police vans) here in ballarat. According to the local paper they've caught over 900 people so far in 5 months or something. *shrug*
