RS or AYC

i have a evo 4 rear end... wandering how to tell if its a RS or AYC??? i was told the RS is the better of the two, so thats the one id prefer to use. can any one please tell ,e the pros\cons of the 2??? thanks
 
It really depends on what you want to do with the car? What will it be set up for? AYC definatly has some advantages - and it can definatly make an average driver achieve better times around a track. However the mech diff (rear diff found in the RS models) is said to be stronger, will ultimately give you more control of the car etc.

Taking a quick look over you're previous posts, you are half way through a 4g63t FWD conversion in to a mirage..? Thus AYC shouldn't be of any concern to you.

None the less, you will be able to determine what rear diff you have simply by looking at it - e.g. t will have the AYC/pump etc.

thanks for ur help mate... im am currently doin the 4wd conversion. and the rear is my concern at ther moment... the car will be used for mainly weekend cruiser, but quarter mile car also... agian mate thanks for ur help. much appreciated.

Isn't the AYC system controlled electronically?
So like Missile said, having an AYC equipped rear end won't be much good to you without he rest of the system will it?
Esp over the benefits of the RS one, if it has what Missile said it has.

That's not so bad then I guess..

I thought you would've needed a control module, G-sensors etc

Does the loom plug into the Engine ECM dougmo?
I'm still not sure really how AYC works. So I guess I should stop posting here for starters (!) haha but let us know how you go with it all mate. :)
 
sorry mat i should have elaborated. thats all you need in the back of the car.

the loom runs of the dash/ inside loom
I believe the g sensor is in the centre console area

I believe its a standalone system that isn't controlled by the ecu(but may connect to it)
 
well i have the "complete" rear half of the car... including boot lid, lights etc.. and because the cas on the floor i cant see under it properly...where is the ayc resevoir??? or sumthing i can tell with out lifting the car...i cant get a jack under there.
 
so its a AYC rear... is there much difference, the way the car performs if is RS or AYC??? i have the car booked in for febuary to put the rear end in, and i dont want to spend so much money if its not worth it... if im going to be dissapointed... the car will be used for weekend cruising, but i want about 220kw... having some evo's yourselves, do u think its worth it?
 
For what you are planning on using the car for mate the diff you have will be fine.
If you were going to run a dedicated track car then converting to an rs rear end would be a great upgrade (if you can find one and are prepared to pay a large amount for it).
Perhaps an option to consider is buying a cusco centre and running that in your housing.
Ayc is great for the street and for odd motorsport days but in a dedicated track car it sucks as it limits the amount of rear end control the driver has.

I am just about to replace my ayc with a rs rear end....can sell you the complete unit if you like lol:p
The reservoir if you are still looking is in the right hand side of the boot.
 
I think someone stated it earlier but the E4rs rear end bolts strait into the GSR same mountings points etc etc..
But if you get an evo 5-9RS rear end they use an extra mounting point so extra tabs need to be welded into the floor but its really no big deal. RS rear ends are rare and snapped up pretty quickly and normally for top dollar unless your one of the lucky ones ike myself that got the complete set up for under 1,500..

The RS diff:
Its alot stronger over the AYC because of the cast housings, there is a massive design fault with the early model ayc housings as they crack on the innner part of the thrust bearing on the ayc side of the plates.
Ive smashed 4 diffs all at the cost of 700+ each, so its not fun. The late model diffs are a little stronger but if you punish them they will still break.. At the moment i use the cusco centre and i have the RS rear end sitting ready to be bolted up just in case..
Any other questions i should be able to answer them so just ask..
 
And yes the car handles alot different with the rs rear end.. with out going into it in full detail the back end feels alot looser so to speak, the ayc is very forgiving wear the lsd isnt.
