Hey all,

Ive been thinking for along time lately, i have a general idea where i want to take my vr4 in the future, basically i want a slick streeter with the occasional drag duties.

Now before i even put tyre to tarmac im going to need to put in alot of wrench time and coin to get it to where i want it to be.

In regards to suspension:
I like the look my car has atm sitting rather low over the 18's. however due to some dodgey work taken out by the previous owner i want to upgrade the suspension as one of my first mods. Currently its running king spring super lows in the front and dodgey "cough" chopped"cough" springs in the rear. Now, no show/street car can gain attention with choppers in the back, im wondering what the peoples thoughts are on these:

Another issue im facing is the drive train/gearbox, im using a second hand box sold to me by "josh_vr4" after my original ultimatly shat itself, my question is, is it worthwhile sending the original away to ppg to build a helical cut dog box, or should i just get it recoe'd. Are there any benifits using the helical cut gears that ppg offer?

Thirdly, the ecu has been chipped, although no-one up here can read it and tell me what its set up to do, now im wondering if it would be benifitial to get a reprogrammed chip from meek for the setup im currently using, ie 510cc injectors, standard afm, 15 psi, 98 ron fuel, walbro 255 fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, dual stage boost controller, evo 3 big 16g, evo 3 manifold. Or is it a better option in saving a bit more coin for a full aftermarket ecu, ive got a mate up here who seems to be pretty clued in on the Adaptronic system and has installed a few with great results, i understand in the long term this is the better option, and i know i will probly go this route, though is it worthwhile getting a remapped chip from meek for the meantime for piece of mind?

Lastly is fuel consumption, i seem to be chewing it lately, even though im not driving with the normal spirited enthusiasm, what could be causing this?

I feel the car needs some attention, as i have trouble keeping up with standard 5ltrs ffs. With the mods i have been told it should do a easy low 14 with high 13's not out of the question, then why isnt it?

If you want to set it up right, which it sounds like you do, id ditch the chipped ecu and get some sort of aftermarket programmeable ecu to replace it. Chipped Ecus, while they offer good value and solution to running with mild mods, are a pain in the arse if you decide further down the track to upgrade things once again - with a full programmable one it can just be retuned.

I would also look into other coilover options, like tein, who also make models to fit the VR4.

firstly how quick do you want to run at the strip? you only need very minimal mods to be able to run flat 13s and high 12s you can run flat 13s on the standard td05 with exhaust and a boost increase to 15psi,with a decent launch on a good clutch you will hit flat 13s and even a 12.9 if you get a good launch

engine health should be the first thing you consider,no point modding an engine that will shit itself soon, and spend the money now on a good ecu,the midrange gains you will pick up with a good tune is worth it,as for suspension normal lowered springs will easily get you in the 12s but d2's work well and over here especialy are pretty cheap although they are abit on the hard side for everyday use,I would only use coilovers if you planned on doing some circuit work, uprated shocks and king springs are fine for the drags depending on the times you want

good luck finding a set of teins for a VR4, they don't list part numbers on their website and they don't make them anymore (trust me i've done much looking).

I can get 2nd hand sets easy 8)

not to brag but to offer some comparison, i have a "quite" stock jap spec (i.e smaller 14b turbo) with only exhaust and GFB adjustable bov, runs a bit rich under boost, havent touched boost and my el cheapo boost gauge (waiting for better one) records 11-13psi.
I got 14.2 with a 2.056 60ft time, so launches could be better.
Still i was pleased considering they are quoted at 15.0 stock (read from speed magazine).
Your set up has alot more in it from what ive read

Also... i have g4's, same as d2's from what im told, for the price i think they are good and other peopl have said simular, i do think they are hard on street but i've gotten used to it.
I do bounce around tho if hit a big dip in the road lol however they do sit nice and flat around corners.
Ive benn on a trip on bumpy counrty roads with my car sine buying it, quite bumpy i woulnt take my car around australia lol but in city its acceptable
I like them

i have heard that those d2s and g4s are crap and that they bend in some cases have you had any dramas with them so far

i know my car should be into the 12's with the mods i have, but its not...i bought a half arsed modified vr4, i took the gamble of buying it online without having inspected the car, and now im correcting all the mistakes made by the previous owner. It's life, it sucks but i can assure all of you to watch out in the comming year or so, coz if i have my way, this is one vr4 that will be in magazines and a trophy winning street car from the north, cant let all you southerners have all the glory now can we.

Thanks for your info guys, keep it comming, i had a look at the g4 coils, they look the goods, is anyone else running these? Ive also looked into the kyb shocks and lowered springs, but i was always under the impression you get better ride with coils? as its not as "boaty" im used to the bouncing, i have chopped springs hit a decent set of bumps and its like riding a boat. What are the advantages/disadvantegs besides the cost of going to coils over uprated shocks with lowered springs? I figure i can get more adjustability out of the coils ie camber, toe, hieght.

Ive recently applied for a few night fill jobs to get abit of extra cash flow comming in, its time to get serious and nothings going to happen on this salery.

Keep it comming guys.

The D2's are alot better on the street if you get some softer springs for them (in my mates evo4 we went 2kg/mm less at each end and it was a massive improvement - it'd be faster on anything less than glass smooth too).

My silver (near stock) vr4 felt really sluggish until I bothered to check the ignition timing - the cas was retarded as far as it could go - with it set right it's much much quicker, and more driveable too.

My Black vr4 did a 13.6@99mph with a big16G and no synchro's in 2nd, 3rd or 4th  there's a LOT of time being lost there. That's with 171kW @ wheels on 16psi

milkandoj: what trapspeed were you pulling?

teminal speed on the 14.2 run was 95. something. (cant find the slip, put it away somewhere lol)
Just found the sheets of other runs, highest mph was 96.7 on a 14.4 run

My g4's.... one is leaking at the back lol im trying to see if the previous owner finds the recepts coz they got 2 yr warrenty.
Hope he can find it!
Mine might also be drift spc not street spec spring rates, they are hard lol i would agree with saying to get softer springs, my car can get unselttled going around bumpy corners.
Good for privce and adjustable but mine are leaking but theres a 2yr wannanty. Which i need, its up to you.

You can buy replacement cartridges for those pieces of crap from the seller, I think it's JustJap?

Its scary the numder of G4/ D2 shocks that seem to leak even before the 2 yr wty is finished. On the other hand, my Hotbits (which still aren't perfect) have survived 3 years of competition use and still no leaks.

oh well they are a piece of shit then lol
Good thing iu didnt buy them, but now i gotta live with them :?
