Semi-Slicks

OK GENTS

How many of you would put your hand up to purchase a set of semi slicks by... middle of may/end of may give or take. I'm talking to Stuckey (motorsport tyres) atm and trying to drum up better prices than retail!

The actual tyre doesn't matter, how many sets can we sell?

I hope you dont intend to be using these semi's for everyday driving, charlie, how many kms did you get off your set?

I used DO1J's at the drags the other nite - on my FWD lancer VR4 - took my times down from 15.3 to a 14.5. Bit of axle tramp in 1st but after that it was all grip... Heaps better than 3 gear wheel spin i usually get.

Excellent Tyres in my opinion

The Bridgy RE55s aren't that soft so they don't wear out too quickly. Yes I do use Semis day in and day out at the moment. If I get around to getting TE37 MAGs, I will stick them on Michelin Pilot Sports and leave the current rims for track only

I've had them on since my 18" came in. so maybe about 5,000kms or more.

i think federal has just released a new semi slick - supposed to be excellent bang for your buck..
i havent used em tho

I'm interested in that TOYO tyre that dre used...

s01? or something like that.. cant remember, the name is in that other post

You dont need that sort of tyre for road use :?

I roll around on 185's durring the off season and its still pleasent to drive and handles still great.

I race on 15" lightweight volk racing wheels with D01J dunlops. (sponsored)

There is more to it than just width and compound. Semis need heat to operate, and driving around town will not heat them enough to give the level of grip they should have, nor will driving hard though hills/streets. Your better off with a decient road tyre, they will perform better.

Width is something to consider too. The general mullet/cat back racer just wants the widest tyre he can get.. If you get these tyres in a semi slick compound they will never get to temp, even on a race track, so you will be going backwards pretty quick.

I dispute the heating up during hard hill/street work. I've had semi's "at temp" a number of times after hill runs. I don't know how fast you can drive in that FWD, however a vr4/evo will go a hell of a lot faster through the hills. It's possible that your car is also simply too light to cause enough friction on the tyres to heat them up. VR4's are heavy bitches.

Choosing tyre width for semi's should be about as close to stock as possible. 205/215 in vr4/evo's because anything wider starts to screw with your gearing. Most hillclimbers I know run 15 inch semi's rather than 17 inch because it gives them more "room" in their gears. I'm not entirely sure how this works, but I hear them talking about it.

Stuckey recommends you ride as close to stock size as possible (IE 17 inch slicks on a stock 15 inch car is a BAD move.)

I also dispute that a semi won't give better grip even when mildly cold. Have you done any research into tyre compounds?

Gearing? Tyres have different profiles for a reason.

Semi slicks are only good for a dozen or so heat cycles, anything above that and they wont perform like they should. Your better off with a road compound for sure.

As for driving through hills... Once you drive on a legitimate race course and take corners at 120+ you learn quickly that what you though was fast on the street... is patheticly slow compared.

semis

a mate currently has a set of silverstone ftz r's (hard compound) on the front of his startlet (195/50/15). He says that they are better than the pirelli P6000 that were on there previously, even when the ftz's are cold. Since fitting them, he has done hill climbs and motorkhanas with good success. Yes they probably never reached their proper temp but that would only make them grip better wouldn't it?

215/45/17 - $300 each fitted & balanced. I am planning on putting these on my vr4 in a couple of months hopefully. the only down side is that they have very stiff sidewalls and are noisy at 80 kph and upwards.

As Entaran knows.
I have Dunlop Drinazza's (spelling) running through the hills (black spur / redfern) these held VERY well untill they got to hot :(

But that said, i dont think ill run semi's for daily driving, just change over when i want to do that.
