Bit of a strange question here but maybe someone has an idea? Also I know it's a little vague as it depends on a bunch of things but I'm gonna give it a go anyway. What is the smallest size radiator that can go on an early Evo and still allow the car to be used as a daily driver? Am not talking about doing 20 hotlaps around the Nurburgring, but driving in traffic on a hot day.

The radiator would have dual fans and no condenser block in it to cover airflow, and some ducting to get air in and out of the engine bay. It's a lot of variables I know, but if anyone has fitted smaller radiators to their cars I'd love to hear your experiences with what has and hasn't worked.

mine is pretty small
it is a twin dimple core runs only one fan
but i do think it is a little thin
I'm going to built another but 60mm core and only 7mm between fins
they are not cheap as just the core in thge same size is 400 bucks

370mm x 400mm x 40 thats core size it was fine for general driving
but I found it to be a little warm on recovery on track days.
I have limited room behind the rad.

but go a thick as you can go with the best core you can buy.
if you heat a motor you can cause all sorts of heartache.

60mm core... that's a fair bit bigger than stock too, right? Am thinking I'm gonna have about 35mm of space for core thickness. Might have to go for something custom-made but am seeing what everyone else has survived with. Not worried about heat buildup through high load or anything like that as it's only gonna be used for drag racing, but daily driving in heat will be the thing to watch out for on mine.

What about using a Civic radiator, they are half the size at around 350mmx350mm, but can get some abit bigger and u can get them from 28mm to 56mm thick and triple core

I havnt had 1 in posession so i cant guarentee if it will fit easily, but the in/outlet seems to be the right place

The Civic ones fit, but for my needs are a little too big. Am wanting something that will sit where the stock condenser block would be so has to be smaller than that I think.

There are a few difference sized civic half cores (height, width and thickness). I ran a smaller factory 1/2 civic radiator on my gsr and never had cooling problems, used a subaru fan and shroud.

Anyone had any success running the smaller of the VW Scirocco radiators with fans but no shroud? That's the kind of thing I'm looking at.

look at the proton ones, my jummy has a half sized one, they need a bottom mount shifted over or another added, but the drivers side top and bottom mounts are direct fit. the left hand top mount will need moving across but is the right one, maybe bolt it through the top support rail, bottom mount will also be correct, but in the wrong spot, need to re spot weld it in new spot. if you get another bottom mount, leave the stock one where it is, and add the other. neither will foul even if you go back to the full size radiator

Can't use any of the stock mounts as the radiator has to mount where the condenser block mounts in the stock setup (i.e. right in front of where the normal radiator would mount). Think the stock mounts are getting cut out in my setup.

So you want it mounted directly under your radiator support, i see your also running the eclipse thermostat housing so it doesnt matter about having a filler on it, why dont you get a custom 1 made up to suit

I am currently, although the thermostat housing is going to have to be severely modified to clear the turbo (probably only the original flange remaining from the one currently on the engine). I am thinking about a custom one, but am not sure what the smallest size I would be able to run is, hence the thread.

you have to go custom then. and just make it to suit - biggest you can fit with the widest core
easy as.

why not just grout the bottom end and then you have less to cool too.

you did say you wanted to drag race it.

Grout???

Yeah.the car will be used for drag (aims are sub 11s before I start putting methanol into the equation) but will be a daily driver for driving normally too, although I don't actually drive it every day.

Had one lead on a radiator but it's pretty thin:

At only an inch thick it might be touch and go whether it would cool enough, but the plus side is there is one on island I could test fit and check out, and it does have a reasonably sized front surface area. Maybe with some ducting, fans on full pelt and ducting for the oil cooler too it could work... maybe.
