For a while now i've had abit of a squeal when i steer/turn right its gotten worse overtime and it sounds like claws down a chalkboard when i am reversing and turning at the same time. I was sure it was something to do with the steering rack and on closer inspection today i found a boot is fucked to put it bluntly on the drivers side shaft. i have a picture below just wondering what everyone thinks will i need to replace the whole rack? I couldnt really get a good look but i think the shaft might be pretty badly damaged.

Are you sure that the power steering belt isn't worn or loose?? This can cause the screech you mention...??
The photo shows Fuck all other than your brake disc!!

she be alright mate, clean it, grease it, put it back together. should stop its noise. i would try it first anyway. there are brass bushes in the end of the rack. they might need replacing but see how it goes.
give it full left hand down so the rack is sticking out the suspect side and wobble the rack end around to feel for freeplay in the bushing. that bush may be shimmable through the bottom of the rack?
there is vfac on how to rebuild racks, and they are all much the same.
failing that, i have a rack with a stuffed steering arm if you want, but you will need to put your arm on it.

or if you throwing yours out, can i have the drivers steering arm off it so i can complete the rack i have?

I had a similar noise in my GSR to what you described. It happened when I turned in one direction towards the right, especially at full lock. Fortunately, I quickly spotted that the front inner guard on the passenger side had deformed a bit and protruded closer to the tyre. Whenever I turned right, the left tyre was scraping the inner guard. I pushed on the inner guard and it popped back into place.

It could also be that the inner side of one of your front wheels is scraping something due to a bad wheel alignment adjustment. This also happened to my car when I took it for a routine alignment and they gave too much adjustment towards one side so the wheel turned too much. When I turned full lock, the wheel was scraping against something, probably the suspension arm. But check the inner guards first. Start with the simpler stuff then work your way up.

regardless, if the boot is shagged, you need to fix it.. mark the threads with paint pen so you can put it back together without stuffing your alignment
if/when you get alignment, make sure they centre the rack, not just the steering wheel. this gives the same lock side to side. you can move steering wheel on the splines later

Thanks mate did what you said. Arm looks fine going to change the boot and regrease it hopefully itll come up well. Is there a part number for the boot and bushes? And will the bushes need changing? Cheers

if the arm is tight the bushes will be ok. 95% chance they are ok.
i used the universal fit steering rack boot from supercheap, auto one, malz on my jumbuck, was maybe $15. the rack is same as yours except maybe ratio.

i just bought a steering rack boot this morning (about $10 from burson), let me know if you need the p/no and i'll have a look.
