Have another look at the video, brings the car up with the staging brake, he's changing gears on the steering wheel and in turn its moving the sequential shifter automatically.

Awesome :D

After a successful shakedown at the MMP Import meeting in December last year, Dave came away with a new PB of 9.52 @ 159mph. While only marginally quicker than his previous 9.59, the extra 17mph showed promise. This shakedown highlighted a few gremlins that needed work however and these were addressed before the Summer Nationals in Taupo.

We found that the aftermarket solid lifters couldnt cope with the aggressive cam profile we are running, resulting in a couple failing. Dave was also having some issues shifting into 4th gear, and on closer inspection we found that the ATS carbon clutch was really not up to the task of transmitting 1000 whp to the track in a drag application.

Between the MMP meet and Taupo, we fitted a different style of solid lifter which is better suited to the cams. We are confident that this has resolved the lifter issue but need to get a few more runs on the board to confirm it. We also switched to a Quarter Master triple plate clutch. While these arent the most friendly to drive on the street, we have proven their reliability previously, and they are cheap to rebuild.

Probably the biggest change was to develop an air shifter system to improve the shifting consistency and speed. We used an air ram to actuate the Ikeya shifter directly. This meant that if the system failed, the car could still be shifted manually, and we only used the air shifter for the up shifts, meaning Dave still uses the gear lever at the end of the strip to go back into 1st gear. A steering wheel mounted button signals the shift request to the Motec, which then performs an ignition cut while activating the shift solenoid. We were stoked with the results from what turned out to be a pretty simple system.

Taupo looked like it was going to be a non-event on Monday morning, with heavy rain. Fortunately by mid morning the weather was clearing and the meeting proceeded. In the first practice run Dave managed to bump the shifter button when he hit the linelock button while he was staging. When he launched the car was in 4th gear with a predictable bog being the result.

For the second pass, we eliminated the line lock and got Dave staging using the handbrake as he had done previously at Masterton. Unfortunately this pass was another abortion, as we had a fault with the launch control which resulted in it staying active when Dave launched. This meant the car had no power once the clutch was released and could hardly move. Despite the fact that Dave hadnt got to the end of the track, due to Matt Buttimore red-lighting in his RX4 Dave made it through to the final round against Reece McGregor.

In the turnaround time, we diagnosed and solved the issue with the launch control, and lined up against Reeces GTR which on paper should have been an easy win to the Skyline. Dave managed to leave on Reece with a 0.344 reaction to Reeces 0.477. This time Daves car did everything right, while Reeces GTR bogged in badly on the line. Dave went through with a 9.03 @ 157 mph to win the final, despite a pretty poor 1.41 60.

It isnt hard to see that a few more passes should have the car in the high 8 second zone, and then we will start increasing the boost. The chassis seems to be handling the current power remarkably well, and the car is putting the power to the track easily. We cant wait to see how it goes with a bit more power in it. Look out for the car at MMP on the 10th/11th and then at the 4 & Rotary Nationals at the end of the month.

We have in-car and startline video footage and this will be uploaded to youtube today. I will post up a link later.

DS9 - Getting The Job Done:

Fresh from his success at the Taupo Summer Drags, Dave and the STM team took Project DS9 to the Xmas Drag Wars at Masterton Motorplex this weekend. The weather was looking promising, and by 9am the high cloud was burning off to leave a perfect summers day. The track crew had the track at its best and a fresh coating of VHT had been applied.

Dave’s first run was a pretty exciting one, as the car well and truly overpowered the track, smoking the tyres right through first and second gear. Despite almost using both lanes, and pedalling the car hard for most of the pass, Dave rolled through to card a 10.35 @ 141 mph.

For the first qualifying pass, we dulled down the launch significantly to suit the track conditions. It got the job done as the next pass was what we all came for, an 8.73 @ 163 mph! The car looked rock solid and left the line hard with a 1.33 60’. We had built the car to run into the 8’s and Dave didn’t just nudge into the 8 second zone, he demolished it! While we now had cause for celebration, there was still work to be done.

For the second qualifying pass, we didn’t touch the car other than the usual between-round maintenance. Dave set about backing up his 8.73 with an 8.70 @ 163mph. The run was basically a mirror image of the last run, with another 1.33 60’. This had Dave top qualify in the Sport Mod division.

For the first elimination round, Dave scored a bye run as Nick Reid had gearbox issue in his Mazda R100. We made some minor changes to try and get the car to the half track quicker, however we had made the decision that we didn’t want to increase the boost until we felt the combination was maxed out. The next pass blew us all away with an 8.63 @ 164 mph! The car was getting a little bit loose now as the track was loosing some of its bite, meaning Dave was pretty busy behind the wheel.

Analysing the data after this run, we can see that there is still more in it. The car ran a 1.34 60’ on the 8.63, however it has run a best of a 1.280 to the 60’. On its own, this would drop the ET into the 8.5X region. At this stage we have only seen around 32 psi boost in 3rd and 4th gear, so we are still a long way off the potential of the engine. It is pretty obvious though that with the small 24.5 x 8” slicks we need to run for the Sport Mod class, that we will need a pretty good track to put more power to the ground.

After analysing the video from the runs, we also need to revise the parachute mount. When Dave deployed the chute at the end of the pass, it was pulling the rear end of the car off the ground and causing the car to get very loose, and a few heart-pounding moments for Dave.

We turned up on Sunday with the hopes of nudging Dave’s PB a little lower, however it was not to be. On the first practice round Dave launched and the car turned right pretty hard. Dave aborted the pass and cruised to the end of the strip. After an inspection in the pits we found that Dave had flat-spotted both front tyres pretty badly when he locked up the wheels at the end of his 8.63 pass. As this was obviously a safety concern we made the decision to withdraw from the final, handing the win to Ben Moorcock in his RX3.

Needless to say, Dave and the STM team are stoked with the results so far, and we look forward to improving on them in the near future. Considering the car has only completed 6 passes since its rebuild and it is already within two tenths of AMS’s world record, the potential is obvious. Dave’s next outing will be at the 4 & Rotary Nationals in Auckland. The car will also be on display at the show. We look forward to seeing you all there.

NEW WORLD RECORD!!!

8.420 @ 167.6 mph

STM - Performance Vehicle Specialists In breaking news, today dave stock broke the world record for a late model evo. On his second qualifying pass dave busted out an 8.420 @ 167.6 mph, beating AMS by 0.002 seconds. The car also ran a 1.26 60' time which is a new pb. We are still running, so stay tuned for further updates.

Geezus, if they are only running 32psi then this thing is going to go much much quicker. When you consider that most serious drag cars run at LEAST 50% more boost, the STM team were definitely on the verge of cracking the world record!!! :)
Good to see that THEY DID IT!
There is no mention of the engine?

Worst part about it are the state of the tracks in NZ.......

Project DS9 Claims World Record – 8.420 @ 167.6 MPH!!

After being let down by a damp track at the 4 & Rotary Nationals last month, Dave and the STM crew were eager to get the car back to Masterton Motorplex for the Central Nationals this weekend. The weather gods were kind to us, with hot temperatures and not a cloud to be seen.

After setting up our pit, Dave went out for his first run of the day. An alternator charging issue cut the run short when the low-voltage warning caused Dave to abort the pass around the 1000’ mark. The STM crew fixed the issue easily and Dave got back out for the second qualifying pass.

The first pass had shown that there was plenty of traction available on the well prepped track, and some small changes were made to try and push closer to AMS’s world record. The time slip validated these changes with an impressive 8.420 @ 167.6mph, beating the long-standing AMS record by a slim two thousandths of a second. This time came with a 1.26 60’ time which surprised us all!! Coincidentally Dave had also just reset the NZDRA Sport Mod ET and MPH records.

After running across the weighbridge to satisfy the NZDRA officials, we still now had to backup the record to within 1%. For those interested, the car tips the scales at 1118 kg (2460 lb) with fuel and driver, so it is definitely no lightweight! After the usual between-round maintenance, Dave lined up for his third qualifying pass.

The last pass of the day was a little bit loose off the line with a slower 1.34 60’ time, however Dave still ran through with a 8.46 @ 167 mph to back up his NZDRA records and qualify 1st ahead of Matt Buttimore’s RX4 (8.63 @ 161 mph).

Dave and the STM crew took the opportunity to relax and celebrate his new world record on Saturday night over a meal and a few well earned drinks with the team - not too many drinks though as there was still work to do on Sunday, and another early start!

Sunday’s weather was a repeat of the previous day, and we were eager to try and nudge the record a bit lower. Sadly the first practice pass showed the track was nowhere near as good as it was on Saturday, and Dave had a big pedal as the car moved around in second gear. The timeslip showed an 8.52 @ 167 mph which was as fast as Dave would go on the day. The remaining two passes included an 8.61 and then a very loose 9.03 in the final where Dave managed a holeshot victory over Matt’s quicker 9.02.

While the whole team would have loved to go into the 8.3X region, the track just wasn’t there. Dave made the choice to run in Sport Mod which requires the car to run on a 24.5 x 8” slick, and this really limits how much power we can apply to the track, particularly in the lower gears. To get these Sport Mod cars to run the numbers, we really need everything in our favour and Sunday just wasn’t going to be the day for us.

Keeping things in perspective, the results so far have been simply stunning with Dave breaking AMS’s record after around 18 passes in its new guise. The STM team have been gradually creeping up on the times with small changes to boost and setup each run. The 8.420 saw a maximum of 40 psi boost in 4th gear, with less boost in the lower gears, so there is plenty left in the combination. We are hoping to be able to run in the 8.2-8.3 range at 170+ mph once we lean on the engine a little. Getting these times is going to require a near perfect track however due to the limited footprint of the small slicks. We can only hope that we will get this chance when the Dave competes at the NZDRA Nationals at Meremere on the 19th-21st of March.

Check out the video of the World Record pass here:

A big shout out to Craig from Sparktech who has been great to deal with and has bent over backwards to help us out! And finally a big thankyou to AMS for setting the bar so high in the first place. It wouldn't be much fun if there was nothing to aim for, and Dave had your record in his sights for quite some time. Hopefully this might inspire you guys to bring the car out and try to run quicker.

Do you mean to say that drag cars run ~48psi?
