Ok guys, so I bought a Haltech EX6 off a member here about a year ago with the intention of running it in my GTI with a VR4 RS 4G63T. Considering my conversion has been put off for quite a while now, and the ECU is sitting in a box doing nothing (along with all of the other parts), i'm considering simplifying things and just purchasing an Evo III ECU and associated AFM to run with the engine.

So I've had discussions on here before regarding ECU/loom/engine compatitbilty and just wanted to check what would be compatible with my combination?

Or would you guys suggest I stick with the Haltech considering I have a plug in loom, boost solenoid and everything required to fit this? I won't be running a built engine and I can't see the need for going fully programmable.

If a stock setup is enough does anyone have an ECU and/or AFM sitting around that they would be happy to sell?

If you are building a stock type engine and running factory boost then a stock ecu will be fine.
If you are going a bit bigger with say 14psi boost, then a stock ecu and chip will be fine. Esp. If you are not planning on developing the engine and continuing the mod list.
If you want to build the engine and keep modding it then stick with the aftermarket one as you won't be burning chips every tune

^^ I'd normally agree with Jack, but since you already have the haltech I'd personally just stick with that whatever you're doing

I echo what Jack said, but there is always two sides to the coin, if you just want to get the motor in and go chuck skids, for ease of use, just keep it simple use the stock ecu and just get it on the road. Then later on if you decide you want to turn up the wick on it and go the rat with more boost etc etc, then do it.

Keep in mind will require dyno time and possibly someone to install it if you are not confident in doing it yourself, so that means more money.

Food for thought.

As oggy says, use what you have. I'm not familiar with the haltec features, but I don't really know how much cash you will realize from swapping it for a factory setup.
Maybe better to use it rather than not use it and sell it at a loss.

Arr if anyone knows Tim aka BrisVR4 then it proves that a stock (ecmlink) chipped ecu can do an extremely modified car.

I personally have a PS1000 and they are great as you can live tune and have a lot of flexability and more aux in/outputs i have 24 available
but the klinch is .. if you are tuning yourself stock ecu with ecmlink is easy as pie. (knock sensor is the saftey key)

haltech doesn't support any knock sensor directly. (unless it is a pro ECU) so tuning without knock is done by MBT (which is how it should be) and a pair of cans

if it being dyno tuned by a professional then your E6X has just a little more flex ... although it is an older ECU now. (and unsupported by haltech now)

the stock ecu (chipped or what ever) is probably going to give you a more "factory" drivability.
