If anyone is thinking of using a switchable transfer case, Note they are 1.09 (24/22)
They are normaly conected to a Jap spec 5 speed switchable gearbox.
But can be used conected to a locked centre diff manual or auto if the diffs suit it.
It Can be used with >
VR4 man gearing of 3.866 front & 3.545 rear.
VR4 auto gearing of 3.6 front & 3.307 rear.
Evo 1 & 2 gearing of 4.267 front & 3.909 rear.
It Can't be used where the transfer case was a 1.074 (29/27) in your car.
2 examples where you can't use it is on >
Evo 3 that uses a 1.074
RVR turbo auto that uses a 1.074
I don't know if the RVR turbo man uses a 1.074 ?
If the crown & pinion of the Evo 3 front diff in swapped to a 4.267 it can use one
if it runs a locked centre diff.
If the crown & pinion of an RVR auto front diff in swapped to a 3.6 it can use one
if it runs a locked centre diff. < I'm doing this in my RVR auto box.
Cheers !

Thanks for posting!!

A quick question, have you ever pulled apart a switchable xfer case?

Do you think it is physically weaker than a fixed xfer case?

Hi Baz..Yes I've opened one up to suss it out. There is 2 bearings in the middle & 2 in the tail section to suport the 2 split shafts.
The collar that moves forward & back to run either fwd or awd is from memory 22mm long & overlaps 10mm on each shaft in awd.
The collar has an internal spline & the shafts have external splines. The collar has outer shoulders that the selector fork lives between.
In fwd mode there is No shafts being used. The drive is straight from the hemisphere & would handle what the hemi can take.
I have sheared off the shaft at the crown wheel end of my viscous lsd where the bearing is pressed on.
So far Baz, my switchable transfer case has done the job. I can't say they are unbreakable. I have read they are weak. I say bullsh_t.
Cheers !

I searched modified axle & couldn't find anthing, so I'll throw this in here instead of making a thread.
I had 35mm cut off & a new spline cut on the box cv end of a Magna TE Drivers axle = $200 made in overtime
It was the only way I could adapt a viscous lsd half shaft cv to run in my RVR auto box & match the wheel hub spline.
If anyone needs to do this, measure the fully compressed length of your std axle to work out your min length needed.
Cheers !

Your such a friggen legend Rockabilly.

Admins Mods I reckon he should have his own "Äsk Rockabilly" sub-section on gearboxes, etc

I have a switchable transfer case here but it needs new bearings, only prob is no one knows how to rebuild it here lol

LOL thanks for the heads up ;] You only find weak spots in boxes by giving them hell & breaking something.
You get over that with mods & then find the next weakest spot until you no longer break the box.
Then axles give way, diffs shear shafts off etc.
Cheers !

I can fix it for you if you chase up the bearings.
I'm going to mod a front shaft on one I have here to make it 1.074 (29/27) Then it suits an RVR 3.55 front diff.
I swapped a VR4 crown & pinion into my RVR auto to make it 3.6 to suit my lsd & 1.09 switchable transfer case.
Cheers !
