thermo fan activation?

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

In the EVOs the ECU switches the thermo fan on when the coolant temp hits at a certain level.

In the GSRs I believe there is a separate thermo switch which switches the fan on when the temp hits the set level.

There's a fuse/relay for the thermo fan in the engine bay fusebox.

i have a stock chipped ecu, when using the stock tune the fan works fine, but if i put the flashed chip in the fan doesnt work, so that tells me the fan is controlled by the ecu??

it was done here in perth by Hisham @ tenagha motorsport.

sorry i dont know what numbers are on the ecu.

looks like i wont be using it anyway as my new ecu will be running as a piggyback off the stock chip.

im sure you guys will be right tho, just saying what ive found with mine.
cheers

i had the same thing(i think some gsr's have the thermo switches controlled by the ecu and others/most by a switch) i myself wired in a thermo fan switch. it's not a very hard job to do and is great for peice of mind. in my reaserch i found the activation temp is 86 degrees and the deactivation temp is 75 degrees.

hope the op doesnt mind, but to save me making another thread, is the thermofan in front of the radiator just used for when the aircon is on?

reason is ive taken out all my aircon gear and im eyeing off that fan to remove next :)

hmm infront of the rad (you mean leading edge front of car? if so i've never seen a mitsu with one there. usualy they are on the back one is generaly the thermo fan the other the condenser fan. however both can be used to cool the coolant and the condenser.

prior to my conversion only the larger thermo fan came on. now both do you can never have to much cooling well you can but keeping things cool is always a good idea save weight were you can but try not to sacrifice to much in the way of cooling.

yeah its in front of the radiator, behind the grill. it all looks factory so im assuming its just for the aircon.

fans are only generally required when the car is stationary, so if its for the additional load generated by the aircon i rekon it should be able to be removed.
cheers

The thermo fan is your radiator fan - don't remove it unless you are planning on only racing your car and running an electric water pump.

im not talking about removing the main thermo fan (the one between the radiator & motor)

im talking about the one mounted between the radiator & grill - I have 2 & i rekon the one between the rad & grill is only needed when using a/c?

on the gsr, i have a temp sensor on the radiator side of the engine, right where the hose plugs in. is this the fan sensor, i know it normally in the radiator, but i dont recall one there. also i have no wire for it in the engine loom. i pretty sure it is aussie gsr ecu. i cant find reference to it in wiring diagrams either
