Ok so i've had noises coming from my gearbox/ transfer case area and the mechanic i took it to said he could find nothing wrong with the gearbox. But i knew something was wrong so i had a look myself and noticed quite abit of oil flung up under the chassis near the transfer case where the driveshaft connects i tried taking a few pics just wondering if anyone has had this problem or knows what it is. and also is it an easy fix? and what parts are needed if so? i hope you can make out the pics it was dark and i didnt have my torch on me. cheers

Urr.. it looks like the output shaft seal is weeping... check the level of oil in your transfer case... clean away the sludge/ oil residue as shown and monitor to see how bad the weep/ leak actually is.... as for the noise issue... very hard to call... there are a lot of variables.. when does the noise present?

it happens when i accelerate and the faster i go the louder it gets kind of hard to describe i will record a drive once the car is all back together and post it maybe someone can diagnose it for me.

Things that are coming to mind;

Check oil levels in gearbox and transfer case, thinking low oil and or noisy output shaft bearing or bearing/ centre bearing (tailshaft)....

Diff whine...? oil level in rear diff..?

Process of elimination.. :)

i changed transfer and gb oil not long ago and noise was still there I'm assuming it would be one of the bearing options as the noise sounds like its coming from the front and i also get a vibration when i leave it in gear and decelerate.

Ok.. to determine where the noise is "actually" coming from, I can only think of one solution...

Put it on a dyno for the purpose of loading the drivetrain/ engine and associated bearings.... then pinpoint where the noise and vibration is coming from..

Spending an hour on the dyno for diagnosis purposes will definately save you time and wasted money on "i think its this bearing" (parts).. and labour... dependant on the hourly charge out rate etc...

Sticking your head out the window on the road even as a passenger can be quite a convoluted process....

This is the best I can offer you without going for a ride to hear it/ try to diagnose it..

check the bearing on the passenger side CV shaft. also check the cv next to it,

when the inside cv joints wear they for a ridge inside and cause a vibration and emit a bearing type noise.....after a while that vibration kills the bearing in the mount that bolts to the block.

I have seen a few gearboxes and wheel bearings replaced only to have the same noise present after......culprit was that bearing

That leak looks like my leak on My eterna, which is that leaky plug in the end of the yoke every one with a vr4 talks about. I changed my transfer box seal and it still leaked .before i found out here about the plug in the tailshaft yoke that leaks. But mines so bad that i have smoke from the under the car off the exhaust where mine sprays to the sill panel. But the only noises i get are mechanical thrashing sounds i hear when passing buildings.

check back in the threads in vr4 section for yoke repair by brisvr4 ,i think. I tried to tig weld mine with mixed metal filler wire and it cracked a week later. So i need a new one.
