Thrust bearing issues

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

mmm how do u know its gone? is it making noises and ceases when you depress the pedal?

to remove/refit a new one.. its removing the gearbox... so you may aswell wait til your clutch is fried before you do it (if it lasts that long)

Agreed. Do it as part of a clutch-replacement.
(A clutch 'kit' will contain a thrust bearing).
And replace the clutch fork and pivot ball too.

it is a big job. just replace the clutch as well when you change the bearing, save's you from taking the gear box out twice. also recommend get an OEM bearing from mits. (other bearings get noise over time from experience)

I had this in my Mirage. It thought it was the clutch release bearing too. Turns out it wasnt.

After changing the clutch and bearing the noise persisted. After sourcing a new box from EKW, a week later I had to remove it again to swap in the new one.

I made a special trolley using two scissor jacks to sit under the box. This allowed me to lower and lift the box into the precise position. Just by myself it only took 15 min to line up and whack two bolts in the bell housing. Also I left the crossmember on which helped steady alot.

The spare will later be fitted with Cyborg/Asti gears. In the next few days I will get around to cracking it open for an idea of what is really wrong with it. The new one meshes so much smoother.

With an awd its an even bigger job. Im not looking forward to pulling out my brothers Legnum box to reco the auto. Get some high temp grease as the amount given in the pack is only just enough. As said, replace the fork and pivots if possible, and grease them up well (and where the slave pushes onto the fork)

OEM is just a NSK bearing available just about everywhere.
Spot on even says it in CAPS

so by the sounds of things its easier to pull the gearbox out than the motor. and the only clutch fork i could find was $275 :( surely this is wrong!

You mean it 'doesnt' make a noise when you push the pedal in? When your foot is off the pedal you'll hear a 'ssshsshshshshshshshshsshshshshshshh' sound?

no it doesnt make a noise until the clutch is pushed in... now its suffed but. really difficult to push in and sticks once its there. undrivable

Then its not the thrust bearing.
I think it sounds more like a clutch issue now and most probably the springs have collapsed in the clutch plate and bits fallen loose inside the pressure plate. Whatever it is, you're gonna need to take the gearbox off and have a look at it.

After reading this I turned my stereo off yesterday and noticed I have the same thing, when in gear and accelerating or decelerating I get a nice whine, depressing the clutch makes the whine stop. I believe that is a good indicator that it is the thrust bearing yes?

lol... not entirely. Without hearing the sound in person its difficult to diagnose. It could be just the vibrations and chatter coming through a h/duty clutch.

Hehe yeah internet diagnosis is a difficult thing. I have the standard E3 clutch and the gearbox oil was done about 10,000kms ago. I think it could well be the bearing.

Is this the same gearbox you had notching problems with a while back? What did you end up doing to solve this?
When you depress the clutch and it stops, this is while moving yeah?
As a thrust bearing is engaged when the clutch is press,(depending on condition) it will make a mild rattling when out and a grinding noise when in.
