so, I've been making good ground with the gti to 63t conversion, only to find the water pump needs replacing!

I haven't worked on an evo engine b4, so I need a confirmation, or not, regarding the auto tensioner removal. I'm following this, http://www.vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G.html , as my guide.

Now, at point 12 it says to insert a small pin when the 2 holes are aligned and then back off the tensioner tool. I don't have the tensioner tool, however the 2 holes are already aligned.

My question is - can I continue to remove the auto tensioner and get away with not getting the tool, or, am I missing something altogether?

Thx in advance, hope the above makes sense to someone!

Id be suprised if you could get the pin in without putting some pressure onto the tensioner, if you can I would think it was not tensioned correctly. You insert the pin to keep the tensioner 'set'. Anyways, if you can get the pin in, good stuff, just make sure it goes through the centre pin and out through the hole on the other side of the tensioner body as well. If you cant get the pin in, I never found it too much hassle to reset the tensioner in a vice. Just be sure to be gentle with it, and make sure it's square if you use a vice.

cheers mate and thx for the advice, I thought it was a little weird i could get the pin in, however, the timing belt felt pretty tight.

Or...just do the following...which is in the VFAQ guide that the OP is already following...

To replace the tool for setting the torque - use your fingers ;-)The fast way to do this:Grab a drill bit around .15" - go buy one exactly that size if possible (we used a .152" we had handy), and no smaller than .15"Put that drill bit between the top of the tensioner and the tensioner arm (See Fig 21 above). Compress the tensioner using the battery bolt until it lightly touches the drill bit (can still slide it in and out, but is not rattling loose)Grab the tensioner pulley, rotate it up until the belt is getting taut, then pull up on it lightly (remember, the torque on this is only 2-3 ft-lbs). You can also use a 90 degree circlip pliers to rotate the pulley using the holes for the real tool (if you don't know what 90 degree circlip pliers are, then don't worry about it and use your fingers). Then torque the pulley downLoosen the battery bolt several turns, but don't remove it. Check the tensioner gap, it should be barely over the drill bit size, if not right on it still. Rotate the engine six times, let sit for about 15min, check the tensioner gap again to make sure it is within spec (.15-.18")

Belt tensioner using. Type those 3 words into au eBay search for the 1/4 inch drive tool with the 2 pins. About 20 bucks inc freight from Vic. I would've posted the link but I'm thick as shit and don't know how to!

thx for the advice guys. I did search ebay but didn't find the one you suggested, but I'll just use the tip above about the circlip pliers. cheers.
