hey guys,

well a while ago i was driving my vr4 home from laverton when i noticed i had no boost and then oil was everywhere in the engine bay!

so when i got home i figured it was the turbo seals and oil had pissed everywhere...

after getting a brand new turbo from ATP and installing it i now have boost but car seems to blow blue smoke sometimes on accel or after decel when boosting...

first i thought might just be left over oil in muffler but it has kept doing it so i figure something has to be wrong...

I did a comp test and it says 140 across all cylinders, spark plugs dont seem to be oily at all running lean if anything... Valve stem seals are intact. however looking at the timing belt it looks like its a tooth out. also something has been rubbing on the belt on 1 side there a big groove on the left hand top of belt wearing it pretty thin...

my question is what are the symptoms of a timing belt being out?

car idles and runs fine as far as i can tell.

cheers Grant

You would have to check your timing marks Grant.

Line up all your markings and hopefully they are spot on.

you can check out VFAQ and it should help you out alot.

car will run fine being one tooth off in either direction, power will feel odd though (like the power band has moved) and engine can stutter at times under heavy accel....

also if you take the cam gear cover off and see if the belt sways side to side while the cars running, you may have a idler bearing thats slightly tilted causing something to hit the belt...

and ever checked your PCV valve?

if there's oil "all over the engine bay" you've got a leak somewhere, turbo oil seals will only leak oil into the exhaust and/or intercooler piping. If the turbo oil seal has gone there may be alot of oil in the exhaust, I sprayed a ton of degreaser into mine (removed it first, obviously) and hosed it out thoroughly.

+1 it makes for a nice smoke screen. I found out on my last drive before going away for holiday so had it on my mind the whole trip

A grove in the timing belt is usually caused by someone putting the incorrect length sump bolt in and it cuts into the belt. There are two sump bolts directly under the belt and one of them is shorter so it doesn't rub on the belt.
