This might be a simple question but I'm going to play dumb and play it safe. Doing a timing belt reset after my timing jumped a tooth. Got everything set up and the auto tensioner ready to go on. Now on the vfaq it states that the tensioner pulley should be rotated clockwise so the pulley holes are at the top, but have read elsewhere that for 2Gs it should be anticlockwise so the holes are at the bottom.

So... which one is it?

I followed the vfaq guide to the letter and that motor is still running fine...

This one to be precise....!

Geez...don't tell me that....like i said the motor i used this guide for was still running until new owner removed for respray just recently!
He has given it a few good squirts from what he tells me and no problems so far?

Nice one, sir. And I wish I had that specialist tool for the tensioner pulley. I need the car running in the next day or so really so can't wait to order one, but it'll make the job so much easier.

Managed to get some good tension on the pulley and it was looking great, with the pin on the auto-tensioner sliding in and out as it should do. And then I looked at the cam gears again and saw that when the belt tightened the exhaust cam got pulled around by a tooth. So had to reset and then my little allen key that was in the auto tensioner broke, so I called it a day until tomorrow.

Actually, there are 2 ways of doing it.

For a 7 bolt EVO engine you do it anticlockwise so it ends up like the photo I posted above (also see attachment).
For a 6 bolt VR4 engine you do it clockwise (also see attachment)

Here are the differences in both the manuals:

And that's where the problems come in. With a 1G (which I assume is the factory manual you have), the tensioner pulley goes clockwise, but with a 2G it goes anticlockwise (making it much tougher to tighten as you're tightening the bolt clockwise but wanting the pulley to tension by going anticlockwise.

Dammit man, make one post and stick with it!

Thanks though - given me an idea of something to check and try - as soon as the shops open tomorrow and I can get a replacement allen key I'll be on it :)

As a tip...

The battery hold down rod makes for a good 'tensioner holder'. Just grind the end to a long point and proceed :)
