Ok, I've replaced the head gasket on my 4G63 (RVR) , heads been crack tested and skimmed, all back together fine, but my timing doesn't want to be a team player. I line everything up to TDC, line the balance shaft up properly so the weight is at the bottom and the marks line up, line the cam marks up, put the belt on and the tensioner pulley and hydraulic. But for some unknown reason, when I start her up, she runs rough as balls and the timing marks are out again by like half a tooth to a tooth... WTF?? Anyone got any ideas? Cos I'm scratching my head over this one..

The tension of the belt is pulling everything out. You have to compensate for the belt slop. So line everything up starting from the exhaust Cam, move to the intake, down to the oil and then crank keeping the belt tight. Slip the belt on at the tensioner and turn/tighten the tensioner pulley. Spin by hand. Everything should be good.

I've tried this already, thats why I'm so confused. Nigel might be coming around this arv to give me a hand.

As baz says.
You gotta line them up and put the belt on. When you release the tensioner things will move, you have to allow for this, if it is 1 tooth out you need to take it past it's line up mark when you put the belt on.

DO NOT START ENGINE till you have spun engine over by hand and checked the alignment. Only spin the engine forwards as it may jump a tooth if you go back.
If you stuff your engine doing this, you are a doofus. Take your time, check it, and recheck it by spinning engine by hand (take the plugs out if it's to hard) and check it again before starting it

You have to actually pull both cam sprocket marks side by side whilst putting the belt on. Then when you release the sprockets it will look like its half a tooth out.
Have you adjusted the CAS to another position to see if it will kick over and run a little better?
Whilst you had it idling roughly, did you earth out the brown timing plug on the firewall, hook up a timing gun and set the timing by adjusting the CAS?

Possibly due to the machining of your head, your marks may move slightly. If you had adjustable gears you could compensate with those.

You should get yourself the ams timing belt tool. They are a fantastic product.
