Fairly sure it's 35% here in VIC manny. In saying that though, I reckon you can get away with 20%

20% in queensland mate

Actually law is same all through out Oz now...35% all round doesn't matter who you are even limo's can't have 5%. However you'll be fine with 20%

i read somewhere you can have 75% tint on the front windscreen too? and yeah, agreed. 35% on sides.

BUT if they knock you back for tints too dark, they need to have a tester with a printout to prove it apparently, and not many places have such capacities.

Forget about the windscreen all together..don't even bother.
Cops usually won't worry about illegal tint unless they wanna be arseholes and are looking to defect. Even still they only use a business card and if they can't read it through the tint they will defect. In my 10 years of tinting I've only seen a machine that will properly tell you darkness once, some RTA guys might have them though.

Its not illegal if it was already installed on your car before the law came into effect. So basically if you have a 1993 model car backwards, you can have 5% tint installed, provided you are good at convincing people youve had the same tint for the last 17 years! lol. If you've got proof that the car has been locked up in the garage or whatever for several years then you're in with a good chance  Apart from that 35% is the legal limit across all states. The difference between 25 and 35% tint Im told is not very noticable as some brands look darker than others but offer the same tint. There's apparently a light test that can be done to check but doubt anyone would pull you up for it.

Cheers for the reply guys.

This is for the my wife's people mover; of which we'll be using to go bit by bit to go around this beautiful Australia.

Ive met a fair few people on car cruises that say they get defected for tint.
They put it back on after clearing the sticker and get defected again. Like its some expensive game.
These are commodore bogans that just keep putting it on and off as they get stickered.

SO maybe the cops are more vigilant over here on tint.

i got knocked back for pink slip once because the guy was a bastard about my tints... went to a tinting place, and the tints were tested to be around 13% (had tints over factory tints)... the guy there told me that without a printout, they're not allowed to knock me back. But he'd put it on RTA database that it failed... prick.

Had to strip the tints to clear the pink slip, then get them replaced. waste of $$$ and now it looks shit because it's a different colour black to the rear.

If you are planning on going around australia then i would go darker than 35% especially if heading to the northern states, NT, Far North QLD etc.

you should have just gone to another place for a pink slip, they all put it to the rta database if you go elsewhere but it doesnt mean much unless its something major... ive gone for blue slips and been knocked back knew they were just being picky so i just went elsewhere and was passed...

i have 5% all round on my car and its great in the daytime, stops you from getting sunburnt etc but at night its a pain as you have to put the windows down for round abouts or at T intersections cause you cant see much, reversing out of the driveway at night it useless gotta hang your head out of the window to see anything.

my old man has 15% silver/mirror tints on his car, the silver stops anyone being able to see in but its light enough to see out of. Could be another option.?

oh.... but you can have the back as dark as you like :) just the fronts need to be 35%

So anything behind the drivers door can be darker ????????

I tought that's only for commercial vehicles.

just go 20% you'll be fine..

I highly doubt you could convince a cop your tint is more then 17 years old...and besides that law is a croc of shit..today is what matters..everyone follows the same rules, no one is more special then anyone else even cops...if your willing to go illegal tint just be prepared to take the fine on the chin and don't whinge like bitch because at the end of the day your old enough and ugly enough to make your own judgements :)

Knock on wood my limo tint has gone unnoticed in the eyes of the law so far
and I've been defected a couple times....never picked up on it

Shrug, i've had 5% on my car since I bought it. No hassles yet, been pulled up plenty of times.

For that matter, had 5% on the silver one as well which I had for like 18mths+

Mine are purple from wear lol i always thought it was 25% leagl limit in nsw i must of remembered wrong, i had 15% before and are soon to get 15% on the vr4 aswell
