Tips for removing 5th gear from the shaft

Hi Guys anybody for any secret tips before i attack mine?

Last time I did it was about 5 years ago?
I had some gear pullers which I don't have access to at the moment.

And I recall on my very first removal, I managed to chip a gear tooth during the attempt. Ta.

Heat the gear Or freeze the shaft with that can stuff perhaps?

You need a very special puller. I made mine up. Its a tube effectively with a lip on the bottom to engage into groove on top of the 5th gear. The puller has been cut lengthwise into halves, and then clamped back together when on the gear. I made a threaded plate that then sits inside the adaptor, and I simply wind the gear off. any other means of removal will almost guarantee gear tooth damage ! I can take a photo if you want.

A photo would be awesome Mike. Some 5th gears are worse than others..
I normally use to flat pry bars but as above, they don't always work and you risk chipping teeth if you're too hard on them.

My first box, as i may have mentioned chipped a tooth while pulling...

I just did this on the weekend. It all came off very easily fortunately.

Now, I'm stuck with another issue, the PAR 5th gear i bought is not the right type.

Anybody got a 5th gear combo from an Aus Spec? for measurement by PAR so they can make me a new gear.
I also need to purchase some syncro's and also the end case. Mine are a bit worn out.

I've got some leads but nothing locked in yet.......

Sucks when you have like 5 gearboxes and sell them due to space constraings. Then when you need them you can't find spares.........

Is a GSR end case the same? Might be able to help you if it is.......
I also have other various gearbox spares here too.

I'll try and send a pic of my tool tomorrow... I've been flat out getting us and customers ready for Classic Adelaide tarmac rally sorry. Mo... do not use pry bars ! 5th gears are hard enough to find these days without chipping them !!
