Hey everyone,
We've got a little dilemma we're trying to solve. We run in the ARC and want to do the Perth round this year. Transport is the real issue, as we have the car (Evo 6) which usually fits in an enclosed trailer towed by a Nissan Patrol.
These are the options we are considering:
1) Tow it in our trailer with the Patrol. Uses about 33L/100k, so that would be about 2300L of gas (7000ks). Guessing gas would be close to $1 per litre on the Nullabour, so around $2300-$2500 in total. Cheapest but requires someone to take the time off work to drive there. Also quite heavy which means its a pretty hard drive in the Patrol. Plus we can't get our recce car (FWD Lancer) there unless we drive it separate which would be about $1260 (10L/100 @ $1.80 per L). So $3600 total.
2) Hire an 8T truck. Just got a price from Hertz, $143 per day plus 33c per k over 150k per day. This means around $2650 to hire based on 14 days and 7000ks. Can have the rally car inside with spares and tow the recce car on a tandem trailer behind. Diesel consumption say 15-18l/100? At $1.80 that would be about $2000 in diesel. Total $4600 but means everything is there in a vehicle that would be easier to get there.

4) Put all our stuff in someones truck or in a trailer behind someones truck (and drive the recce car there). Does anyone drive a truck? Know anyone who does who could do it cheaply?
I'm really hoping to get over there, but boy it's looking tricky!!
