Hey so I'm looking at getting a kinogawa turbo. I've heard some good things about them. First I was thinking a td05 20g but settling for a 18g for response. (feel free to convince me otherwise.

The main question I'm wondering. I've done a bit of research but no straight answers.
What's the pros/cons to water and oil cooled compared to water cooled only. I've found info on oil only cooled compared to water and oil. but nothing on water only

Here's the turbo in question http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?itemId=270893200213

oil cooled is for drag cars and trucks.

water cooled will help cool the CHRA when your cruising around and in between spirited driving.
if its not watercooler you will probably cook the turbo cos the oil will get so hot.

if it was me i would go a TD05H-20G backcut.
my evo made 225kw @ 19psi with a chipped ecu and 264 hks cams. response was great. (back in 2006)

i think you will max out the 18g easily and be forced to buy another turbo.

thats from my experience anyways.

Good point there

So is water cooled both water and oil. My stock td05 has both water and oil lines

Aha. So is it better to go just water cooled or find a turbo that is both water and oil cooled

The oil is used to lubricate your bearings.

All turbos are oil cooled.

The water cooling is an option. Some will have them, some will only have the oil as a cooling substance.

No such thing as non oil cooled turbo.

The oil is primarily used to lubricate the bearings but the cooling affect is a secondary yet critical function.

So it should be safe to say that all turbos are oil cooled.

LOL cant get just a watercooled turbo :p cos then the bearings would seize cos theres no oil lol..

just get ur standard turbo hiflowed (internals changed) so from a TD05H-16G to a TD05H-20G backcut or something like that..

Aha. So in the link above where it says water cooled. It actually means oil and water coz all turbos need oil :) I was hoping that was the case. Just wanted to be 100%

My current td05 16g has massive cracks in the exhaust housing, so to upgrade it I'll need to get everything individually messier to just get a whole new turbo.

See that's big. What kinda power is it making. My current turbo (16g) is bad. Starts boost around 4000 and climbs gradually till about 6 :s it's ******!

Haven't hooked up water cooling lines to my TD05 turbos in 10 years or so (I would guess 8-10 turbos). It does make your turbo last longer to have it water cooled, but how much? Those turbos are so cheap (used), that I do not even bother with water cooling.

However, it is worth mentioning that my cars are not driven much (3-5k miles per year). If I bought a new 16g and drove it 5k+ miles, I would make sure to connect the water lines.

If your turbo has bad exhaust housing, you could replace just the housing! No need to do complete turbo swap!

Yeah I was thinking just replacing housing.

But there are more pros to getting a brand new turbo.
It's brand new
You know it works
I can get something bigger
Ect

As opposed to:
Cheaper option to replace housing
But if that's not the only problem with the turbo then I still need to replace things

Aside from cracked exhaust housing, turbos do not really have problems that hinder thier performances. They ether work, or they they don't (smoke is a variation of not working).

Hmm. Not getting any smoke. Ill get a new turbo. Might chuck the current one on my cb for shots and giggles :)

Buy my turbo setup..... I'll be picking it up from where I tore down the engine this week and bringing it back to Melbourne so it'll be available for review.

I'm definitely going ahead with a new turbo setup now, so the sale price will be a bit cheaper than the EOI price - check the For Sale thread for details.

Bolt on jobbie, quality goods, looks the goods and goes the goods :D
