i have a vr4 rs, when i start it up (cold) it makes an exhaust leak kind of sound. as it warms up the noise goes away and seams fine. the noise comes from the turbo area, can anyone help me out? :?:

Sounds like you have a crack in the exhaust manifold, real common in VR4's as they're getting on a bit now. I'd recommend a new cast manifold- like the ones from gt pumps

Basically, pull the heat shield off and check everything, the manifold, the exhaust manifold nuts, the nut and bolts that hold the turbo to the manifold and the dump pipe connection to the exhaust housing. VR4 manfolds also like to warp over time and pull away from the head at each end.

With the heat shield off and with everything cold, if you start it up then, you will be able to tell pretty easily by feeling around for air leaks.

thanks 4 the help. i will have to wait to next week ot pull it apart as i am going to the sunshine coast tomorrow. will let u know what i find.

thanks 4 the help. i found the leak today. there is a snapped exhaust manifold stud, right at the end. you can feel the air comming out.
thanks again

i have finally got around to replace the missing stud only to find those wee cracks, i tried to find that after market manifold but that site has closed, can anyone help me out?

i have 2 vr4 mani's both uncracked, one ported to 7cm and one stock one, if thats what you mean, havent read the whole thread

do you have a 14b or a 16g? cause turbine housings have bigger inlet on 16g, well the s16g i had did anyway

well i have them both sitting next to each other on the ground, the standard mani is uncracked, the ported one has a 2 cm hairline crack near collector

sorry to hijack/ask a noob question...but what type of gains are expected from an upgraded manifold?

im not doubting it would increase the power ( from better air flow) , im just wondering how benificial they are. im thinking that an aftermarket manifold would only benifit if your'v got an upgraded turbo and running some pretty high hp's. am i right in thinking that a aftermarket manifold in a high hp engine would return more gains then an aftermarket manifold in a stocky and is used to just bring flow up to par to what the engine needs

How sure are you that they aren't cracked?

Pretty rare for a VR4 manifold not to be cracked.

Not trying to prove you wrong, just a comment....
I got one i just pulled off my car, only one crack where the runners all merge for the outlet into the turbo, on the dividers that stick out inside there. (for lack of better description).
And my 060 housing off the 14b, no cracks and the casting texture is all there and looks perfect, nothing like some of the warped pics ive seen inside exhaust housings. Apparetnly the exhaust housings like this are even rarer. Thats why ive hung onto it.

I remember reading, possibly an article from rre engineering in America, thet recon the gains of an evo exhaust mani over stock vr4 is much better top end as you'd expect.

I couldnt comment on the gains as i went bigger turbo aswell when i put one on.

A stock vr4 mani; the step inside the fire ring is a tad over 45mm, and the diameter of the step outside the fire ring is 55mm.
The ported evo mani i have had had the fire ring step ported out and is 60mm. Same as gt pumps stuff.
Looking at the two the differnce on the outlet is massive, vr4 one is all for velocity and quick spool and evo is much more for flow.

Comparing the hole for flow of 45mm to 60mm of the ported evo one!
